Everyone has those events in life-someone dying, someone jerking them around (whether its romance, friendship, family, other, whatever), these things that happen that just make you keep putting walls up around your heart and yourself, and keeps you from really experiencing so much more. Of course there's more war going on, and we know that, but this is how these people-AMERICAN's-relate since that where our citizens are atm (there, and Afghanistan). Not to mention that i'm pretty sure Coldplay had been vocal against the Iraq war, so while I believe it does target war & deployments and such in general, i'm sure they had it in mind, being as it's one of the most controversial conflicts that are going on right now in the world. I think there can be a few different interpretations...when I first heard the title of the song, I thought of maybe a prostitute, because of the term "Belle of the boulevard" and the reference to the dirty joke and her letting him touch her knee...the term "boulevard" just kind of makes me think of a girl on the street.... After listening to it, though, it could just be a girl who always hangs out in bars and is looking for a guy to fall in love with, and all they want is that one night and she always gets burned by them; the song is basically telling her to keep her chin up. My fav off the new album...so awesome... I like their old stuff a lot too, but I think this stuff is good too...people seem pretty angry over it though...little elitist if you ask me...people should be happy that they're experimenting with stuff. It's gonna take me a few more listens before I can interpret this, but for a first listen, I must say, I am overjoyed that a band has published some well written songs dealing with real, intelligent issues in the world. I know others have done it, but this song is so charged with it's words and melodies, it's very good. IMO, this is about religion, like everyone has been saying, but I don't know if it is a praise or a criticism. I suppose it depends on what your feelings on religion, in this case catholicism, are. |

This is a completely different take on what a lot of people take it to be, but I saw her on TRL one day and she was talking about how "Love Song" and how it was about her record label and how she was irritated with how they kept pressuring her. Because of that, I think "Bottle It Up" is actually about music itself. If you've seen the video for it, everyone, all ages and genders are playing a piano or keyboard, or something to do with music. The love she is singing about is for music itself. And I think part of it is her saying that songs about love isn't what she wants to write about: We can understand the sentiment you’re saying to us oh, But sensible sells so could you kindly shut up and get started At keeping your part of the bargain aw please little darlin' You're killing me sweetly with love, love love love It's like they want her to write songs all about love, but she wants to write about other things. "Still a baby in a cradle got to take my first fall" All of this is about her journey in the music industry; she's rising, but she's still learning. And here, Started as a flicker meant to be a flame Skin has gotten thicker but it burns the same It's like even though she's been rejected, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. Theres more, but i'm just suggesting a different way of thinking than relationships, mostly because I'm tired of songs on the radio all being about love and relationships...mostly because I can't really relate to, and the ones I can, I don't want to think about those situations. I think she's the same way; she doesn't want to write about only love because songs like that are everywhere. She wants to do something different and her own thing. |
