Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 19 years ago
Lately I've been dealing with an emotional crisis of sorts. I'm completely smitten with this completely awesome girl, who apparently feels pretty much the same about me as I do about her. The problem though, is that she's moving to another city to go to school within the next week, and neither one of us is willing to get into a long distance relationship, so we don't really know where we stand at this point. I've been struggling with this for a few days, brooding, and turning options over and over in my head as is my wont, searching for resolution to my own internal conflict in this issue. To at least some extant, I have found my resolution in this song.

The song follows a sort of psychological progression of thought. The colors black and white are the extremes of the color spectrum. The significance here is that in his 'infancy', before gaining experience and wisdom, the speaker thinks only in absolutes. Always, never, forever, etc. In the next line, "red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, lets me see," the speaker realizes that there is more to life than the stark absolutes of always and never. Essentially, this song is about learning to take life as it comes. Its about learning to not try and cram life in to a little box and try to force it to fit your preconception of what it should be. Its about reaching out to embrace whatever may come. I feel reasonably sure that when he wrote, Maynard's meaning is much more specific and personal as I think is the case with most of the things he writes. However, when an artist publish a work, then it is up for interpretation. It is up to the listener to decide what it means to him or her. For me, this song has shown me that I must reach out and embrace whatever may come between me and this girl. I don't presume to claim that this is the only interpretation of this song. I think everyone needs to decide what it means for themselves.
