Iron Maiden – Out Of The Silent Planet Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems very much to be based on the book by Lewis, but with a bit of a twist in that it seems to critisize the attitude of that book and religion at large.

Note the lines "Deserted by the hand of gods of their own creation" , "You are guilty, the punishment is death for all who live", "I accuse before you, before you know the crime it's all too late".

Especially "Haggard wisdom spitting out the bitter taste of hate" seems very much to be about religion and the message of hate that underlines many faiths.

Basically a critique of the Lewis book that somehow proposes it OUR fault we are on a "silent planet", and that we deserve the punishment for not accepting god.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about Thelema, the philosphy/religion of Aliester Crowley. It has a whole bunch of references to Thelema; words having two meanings (Crowley often wrote algorically and there is a secret meaning to his writings) the part about looking West, a new day that will dawn (the New Aeon), the piper (probably Pan), Our Lady (i.e. BABALON).

But most of all it's about hope, and the hope that the philosphy of the New Aeon will bring. My favorite part is "There walks Our Lady we all know, who shines white light and wants to show, how everything still turns to gold, and if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last."

Black Sabbath – Lord Of This World Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think that it has to mean "convert or burn" or be about satanists, but it can be about people who are vain and shallow and not concerned with the bigger issues in life. All they care about is power and money and other wordly things, so they are essentially "selling their souls", and the final question means that when you are dying will you really care about all your money and wealth? It won't save you, nothing will, you will die.

Not all Nick Cave songs are about PJ Harvey. I think this is just a generic love song, with no real deep meaning. Still nice though.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where Do We Go Now but Nowhere? Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think the kid necceserily fell of a balcony, but maybe he was sick. The "clinical benches" and "chemical lights" makes me think of a hospital, as well as the part about "clean, antiseptic air". The part about the balcony and the little fingers pressed in his hand might just be a happy memory, and that when he says "Full of glass and bleach and my old razor blades" he might be refering to his wife, i.e. that she tried killing herself. I don't know, just another way of looking at it.

Joanna Newsom – Flying a Kite Lyrics 19 years ago
Drugs. Common, ever hear the expression "high and a kite"?
And also, there are some other references, like "the foggy fields", and

"If this is medicine woah-oh
It tastes like medicine
Just help me get it in"

seems to refer to shooting up. Some other things like "Is bitten by the wind and rocks" and "like the streets are like an open mouth" seem to indicate that the person doing the drugs is out on the streets, i.e. homeless.

Also, this is kinda out there, but

"And i see i give you a piece of my mind
But i'm giving you a piece of my mouth
You blushing boy,s how could you be so blind?"

Call me a perv but might this mean giving head for drugs?

Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to agree with the abortion idea, furthermore I think it's about an unmarried woman who has to get an abortion for religious reasons.

"...the difference between
the sprout and the bean"

I.e. the differece between what begins to grow and what actually grows and becomes something; between a fetus and a child."

"...is a golden ring,
it is a twisted string."

I.e. marrige; the difference between getting to give birth and having to have an abortion in weather you're married or not.

"And you can ask the counsellor;
you can ask the king;
and they'll say the same thing"

This seems to suggest eighter that it takes place in a country where giving birth out of wedlock is considered shameful and/or where abortion is illegal (or where a lot of people think it should be). The king and the counsellor meaning the politicans who are in power.

The part with the white coats I agree seems to be about doctors.
Being "fey" and "water running down the white throat" might indicate that the woman drowns her sorrows of losing the child with liqour. "Sleeping as though dead" means that she is very depressed and lacks the will to do anything; she just sits around and mourns all day.

"Shoul we go outside" and "should we break some bread" I'm guessing represents a desire to overcome this situation; both on a personal level (getting over her loss) and a socio-political (birth out of wedlock not considered shameful and/pr legalization of abortion.)
