i remember hearing this being about the cold war and the imminent threat of nuclear war, and how whatever words, maybe in the form of treaties or agreements, we make and use only cloud the main goal and only lead to more shit hitting a planetary fan. "Vows are spoken to be broken" that can mean that watever promises that were to be made were likely to be broken. but looking at all the other possible meanings, this seems kinda bleak. BTW, not every song ever made, especially by Depeche Mode, is not about love and relationships. they're other things to sing about other than a fucked up relationship. |

iyou have to ask about this song, then my advice to you is to take history class. the song is clearly about the man behind the behind the band, Archduke FRANZ FERDINAND. its about his assassination by Gavrilo Princip, young man from Bosnia and a member of the Black Hand, a revolutionary group for slavic unity in the balkaans during the early 20th century. his wife(or fianceee, i can't remember), Sophia, was murdered by Princip as well. he used a now infamous revolver- hence "...first six shots are for you.", to do the dirty work. the assassination was the boiling point regarding slavic and germanic tensions in the region. this was basically the basis of the First World War, hence "...Europe's gonna weap." |

the song and the video mean two different things. the video,while watching it for the first timeseems wierd, is actually really awsome. it's about how lifr can be going your way but in an instant can change for the worse, but can change again as quickly as it did before. while the song is, really, quite enigmatic. it can either be put in the common aspect and say it's about not receiving the care and respect you want from the one you love, OR, if you tie it to "Mad World" the way it's suppossed to be, then it realy be about anything that fits the bill, eventhe subject of life is a good candidate. "When your intrusion's my illusion" "I asked for more and more how can I be sure" "I can operate on nthis failure When all I wan to be is... COMPLETELY IN COMMAND!" Those lines can actually go both ways. p.s, if you havent seen the video, keep an EYE OUT for the little kamakazi attack on Mr.Orzabal. |

first off, i'd like to say that nightandday couldn't be anymore right, if you guys are going to comment on something, hav a basis 2 cover ur ass when u talk about it and, really, please don't bash someone who in every way has more shit to deal with in a week than you do in ten years. Now, in my opinion this song, this song hits harder when looked at from a homosexual view, but that dosen't mean that's wat it's about. its simply about how a forbidden love is in the works and it is being frowned upon by most otehrs( maybe an interracial, gay, class oriented, religious, ethnic, etc.), and how one of the memb ers of this love feels ashamed, worried of what the others think, or even fearful of his bodily health. and the other member of the relationship trying to tell the other not to concern himself with what they think(So hand in glove I stake my claim, I'll fight to the last breath, If they dare touch a hair on your head, I'll fight to the last breath) |
