Kanye West – Amazing Lyrics 16 years ago
Self Aggrandizement, plain and simple, almost to the point where it boarders on being a satire of itself

With some some obvious input on the chorus and rhyme scheme from a third grader.

Beyoncé – Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is as close to meaningless as they come.

It's basically the same song as T-pains 'Buy U a Drank' but from the reverse gender stereotyped perspective. This song complete garbage that does no less than reinforce the already perverse sense of love, and self worth that woman who buy into pop culture have. It conflates love with the ridiculous and archaic institution of marriage, then it further conflates that institution with the most vain and materialistic symbol thereof. At the very least she was able to work in the line "we tighter than my Dereon jeans", so while the rest of the song is dribble at least she also manages to get across the message the meaning of life is to acquire the most fashionable designer attire (Note: that was better than any of the rhymes in this song), in case the listener failed to realize that this whole universe/consciousness system is really at it's core just here to feed into the psychosis of little girls playing dress up.
"I can care less what you think...
I need no permission; did I mention "Don't pay him any attention"?"
As a general rule when I don't care what people think and am not paying them any attention, I usually avoid singing songs in which the most commonly used word is a pronoun referring to them. That is of course if you don't count 'oh' as a word, the oh oh oh line speaks for itself.

In closing Beyonce is clearly a Demon (think Bill Hicks, not the Pope) send here to corrupt human consciousness and soften the souls of the feeble for the consumption of their banker overlords. The fact that she has managed to attain this degree of stardom is a clear sign that the world will be coming to an end soon, and well, if this is the type of garbage that we're using the world to produce then it's probably for the best.

Akon – Right Now (Na Na Na) Lyrics 17 years ago
This is by far Akon's worst song, at least the worst of any I've heard and I've heard most of them. This is like his version of the Beatles "I wanna hold your hand". Not that Akon is anywhere near the Beatles level, but I do consider him somewhat talented if lacking in meaning and message. This song just is mindless dribble that a melodramatic 9th grader with no perspective on life would write, it just fuels ego centric delusions of reality that are bad enough with out this type of consciousness degrading pop garbage reinforcing it. It has no redeeming qualities, at least I wanna fuck you, another of Akon poorer songs, had some edginess and hint of social satire to it. This song sets the standard for selling out and betraying artistic integrity, as I boarder in a frat house I take the fact that, stupid drunken loud obnoxious girls who frequent frat parties and don't know there true self from the Cinderella, princess, high school drama characters on TV that they are trying be, think this song is OMG awesome and should be listened to multiple times as enough evidence upon which to rest my case.

Chevelle – Point #1 Lyrics 17 years ago
For me this song is defiantly about bankers, and debt and how basically people are fucked.

I view it as pushing towards a revolution with uncertainty as to the violence/peace ratio required.

'It seems I've gained the world, but have nothing'
Humans have inherited the whole planet, but normal people don't own shit and are forced to rent themselves out to the few that own it. Or could be from the point of view of those who do own the whole world, who still have nothing cause all they do is cause suffering, hide in shadows, and get despised by anyone that pays enough attention to notice and then they die like the rest of us.

More likely the form as it maintains a consistent point of view, I just kinda like the latter.

'To keep tabs upon this loss, isn't wasted time'
It may seem fucking hopeless cause they're so fucking ridiculously powerful right now, but its still worth it... maybe someday

'Face opportunities to recognize now we have the time'
We CAN do something, we have some free time now, slavery's chains are as loose as they've been, our capacity for awareness is unprecedented, So long as you can see them you can cast them off, the universe as given no indication that the period of dying for freedom has ended,

'Rebuke' -verb: to express sharp, stern disapproval of; reprove; reprimand.
'don't choke on this twisted dream'
Yup this place (the world) is pretty fucked, don't let it make you give up, keep going, fight as hard as you can, survive.

'Pay for the, whole sum' is debt, the whole fucking global economy is debt driven. In theory the hundreds of trillions of dollars worth of debt presently maintained are supposed to be paid off, riiight.

Point number one is so long as I've got unimaginable sums of money (think trillions) fuck everyone else.
Wage a war on anyone that might challenge my right to it. This policy magnifies pain.

'We need a healing aloe plant
Your soothing hands
Run down my back'
Hope. A wish for evolution to occur peaceably, like maybe if we just promise to hold the bankers and get them laid maybe they'll agree to stop being evil without us having to get together and impolitely ask them to leave the planet, same routine this time with nukes, we'll see how it goes (for any bankers reading this I suggest you strongly consider the being loved, held and getting laid while renouncing evil offer)

'Hate - Well couldn’t do, couldn’t do no wrong
Hate - Do... this could do you in'
Maybe they won't agree, maybe they think they're God and they're gonna awaken the hate of the conscious universe (Think 'Wrath of God' only meant to express meaning). The Wrath of God tends to do those who incur it in.

I agree with chino definitely a spiritual song aimed towards those with a greater than normal sense of awareness, but also I think trying to make aware someone who may not be, it's definitely intentionally cryptic, it begs you to try and figure out what it could mean, what is is you may lack that prevents it from having obvious meaning. In case anyone was having trouble seeing how the devil manifests itself in this world I tried to make it as explicit as possible.

Thanks to anyone that read this far,
Hope it was worth it.

Radiohead – House of Cards Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright, First great song, probably my favorite on In Rainbows right now. Straightforwardly the song is definitely about an 'affair' of some sort, the key party reference seems to imply it's not your standard secretive affair however. But yeah my first thoughts were something like sigma's, the affair meaning is way to straight forward for Thom. But I will say this, infrastructure != capitalism. I think it's about civilization more generally than that. As for NicexDream's(Another great song, favorite off the Bends) point of a house of cards being hard to build and easy to knock down, I agree it's a good metaphor for love, but think it's is also a good metaphor for civilization. For me there's a tone of letting go of all our learned traits and bias and complexes we get from modern society and getting back to something more simple, with the the straight forward meaning being what it is, in this case that more simple thing would seem to be touch/affection/fucking ect. Ever 'meet' a dog or cat or whatever for the first time and have it come up to you and be like (and no not an actually talking animal) 'hey, I think you're awesome how about your run your hands all over my body and scratch and caress everywhere and I'll like lick you with my tongue or something'. Ever wish humans could be more like that with each other, at least sometimes? Yeah me too.

PS For all of those people who are in new relationships or just broke up, condolences, but if you think this/every song is about you and describes your situation perfectly, knock it off, you're just being foolish, everything isn't about you, get over yourself and please stop flooding the internet with your ego centric dribble.

Cake – Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright billvmc2000, before you talk you should check to make sure the words don't come out your ass. Capitalism is a wide ranging idea, but this song is most certainly drawing attention to the waste and corruption in our present State/Corporate capitalist system, hence the references to workers, and afford being in the chorus, excess not being rebelling and drinking of what "they" are selling. As for my computer, it runs on microchip, you know the kind that were developed through the pentagon system throughout the 50's 60's and 70's with massive public subsidy, largely through grants to universities like MIT RIT ect, long before they were even close to being something that could expect a profitable return on such an investment. So yeah if by capitalism you mean one of the largest socialistic programs in the 20th century, then thanks for my computer capitalism. Sadly I doubt you're intellect goes much deeper than dividing things into prejudged categories of 'rules' and 'sucks' which probably makes the universe a lot simpler and easier to cope with for you but it probably also means you'll just label me 'sucks' and I just wasted 5 minutes trying to explain something to you. Please prove me wrong.

Nine Inch Nails – Zero-Sum Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright, I'm not so much gonna focus on what the song means to me so much, my interpretation would probably be closest to nineisnice's, but also includes some things other people have said. What I am going to do is point out where I think people are clearly missing something. First the line is definitely "doomed from the start" not "we knew from the start". In terms of meaning, it's clearly not some sort of love story involving two specific individuals, hence the line "And we will all be back together as one". The references to we and our and so forth are references to all and everyone. There is a sense in which saying something directed at everyone is being said to each member of everyone individually, hence in the lines
"And I guess I just wanted to tell you
As the lights start to fade
That you are the reason
That I am not afraid
And I guess I just wanted to mention
As the heavens will fall
We will be together soon
If we will be anything at all."

I take to be directed sort of at a general you, the Divine if you will, or that which is good or the same in all of us. Basically a way of personalizing a general message and getting across to each individual listener that even though it's a message for everyone that is not a non-personal message, but is trying to convey a caring or compassion towards every individual. Nine Inch Nails – All the Love in the World Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright my two cents basically I take this song to be a commentary on the nature of modern relationships, ALL forms of relationships. (For the record, Yes I tend to slant meanings as being towards this. The reference to insects to start off reminding us of what we've came from and how we've fallen in terms of losing a sense of purpose and balance with our environment and so forth. Now the next line I first thought was 'smears of face reflecting in the chrome' and was about mirrors and cosmetics and superficiality and how people are basically appearance whores, but as crawl I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

The rest I take to be a pretty straight forward loneliness rant, focusing on the fact that being around people is often not even a cure anymore, having become so disconnected they're at the point they only thing they offer each other are illusions of themselves, while the thing suffering from loneliness is not at all illusory in nature.

As for the chorus I basically take all the love in the world as a metaphor for the type of 'love' people seem to be seeking. Where it's not enough to actually be loved and cared for and held and laughed and played with or whatever you want to say love is, but rather to be better than others, to be loved at their expense. It's not enough to sleep with me you have to sleep with me and no one else ect ect. The extreme end of the spectrum being to have all the love in the world, so that everyone thought everything and everyone else sucked and only X was important. Think 'thou shalt have no other Gods before me'.

Nine Inch Nails – Reptile Lyrics 18 years ago
Surprised no one has mentioned this but while I agree there is certainly a theme of individual loneliness here and that a literal whore is being referenced I think there is a deeper underlying connotation. Namely that mother nature is a whore, as it is mother nature who "leaves her self wide open to let the insects in" there are insects everywhere. It is mother nature who leaves honey, though I believe honey is just a prototypical example of sustenance that mother nature has left, its a trail we have to follow as we either devour what came before us or perish. (and get devoured by what comes after). And yeah reptiles seeds, all along the lines of nature, reproduction, evolution. So yeah its a song about evolution and where we came from and how we are and mother nature is 'the' whore, If you can put your ego aside and get yourself out of 'every song is about me and how it relates to my life and personal relationships mode' then it really doesn't take much imagination to see this side of the song.

Tool – Disposition Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is simple and I think people are trying to complicate it to much, to me this song is about the meaning of conscious life, and its really kinda funny that so many people try and fit so much complication into it as to confuse themselves cause thats exactly what people do with life too. Just be, we are humans and language is our thing so we can talk to each other and it helps us know we're not alone and thats that that matters, it doesn't even really matter what we say. If you really wanna know the meaning of this song I suggest staring into the night sky and really listening to the silence.

Nine Inch Nails – Head Like a Hole Lyrics 19 years ago
OK, first off I've always read the line God money, as the divinification of money, so this line reads like God Jesus, or God Zeus, so it referring to some modern day Mammon if you will, a commentary on Capitalism having become to worlds most powerful religion.

To go through the song heres how I read it:

"god money I'll do anything for you"
The things people will do for money, namely labor, service of others, investment and pretending they own things, money motivated crime, ect.

"god money just tell me what you want me to"
Mostly the media and propaganda systems, advertising, and education, especially higher education insofar as it's a system of indoctrination.

"god money nail me up against the wall"
Clearly in part a reference to religion, particularly Christ, but also a reflection upon the individuals lack of power relative to the 'System' and how it basically throws them around as it 'wills', in an unpleasant way.

"god money don't want everything he wants it all"
For a while I thought this line was "I don't want everything he wants it all", either way I think this is mostly a commentary on the nature of this God money, he wants all, to consume everything with nothing left for anyone else, to put it in other words to have the entire world sacrificed on his alter.

"no, you can't take it
no, you can't take it
no, you can't take that away from me
no, you can't take it
no, you can't take it
no, you can't take that away from me"
Individual resistance to this God, trying to hang onto something, more or less individual freedom.

"head like a hole
black as your soul"
A very poetic description of evil, incase it was not yet clear that God money was an evil God or Satan if you prefer.

"I'd rather die
than give you control"
I can't help but thinking of Thomas Paine here, basically a restatement of Paine's "Give me liberty or give me death".

"bow down before the one you serve"
Speaking to the masses, calling them out on the fact that they're living under slavery, included in this as I interpret it are those who generally consider themselves the ones being served, powerful politicians, CEOs of large corporations, and people of this sort. They are perhaps the greatest slaves of all, bowing down the most, serving God money most directly and giving him even greater degree of control over their lives.

"you're going to get what you deserve"
Fairly straight forward reference to the fact that adherence to God money's religion is leading us towards the apocalypse and almost assured destruction.

"god money's not looking for the cure"
Perhaps in part a reference to the apathy of God money towards looking for the cures to actual human diseases, but I view this more as referring to the diseases of the social organism. In fact God money
in many ways is societies disease, so obviously is not interested in a cure.

"god money's not concerned about the sick among the pure"
The pure here I take to be the wealthy and the sick to be the impoverished, and this is just commenting upon God money lack of compassion for the poor.

"god money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised"
I take dancing here as a reference to 'entertainment' more generally, or even deeper than that as an expression of peoples vanity. The general notion is just that of going out, dancing, shopping, partying, eating out, whatever, but in doing so spending money, using things paid for with money and in doing so exploiting the down trodden and unfortunate.

"god money's not one to choose"
How submitting to the religion of God money takes away any legitimate possibility of having freedom of choice.

Just one more note on another possible interpretation of the "no you can't take it, you can't fucking take that away from me line" as he often changes it to in live performances.

This could also be seen as from the perspective of the adherents to the religion (e.g. most of us). This seems to be more so later on in song, particularly when it is sung after the line "lets go dancing on the back of the bruised. Basically about how they take the worship of God money to be part of their identity, how they view it to be part of their way of life and as working to their benefit, and as such will fight to hold onto it and don't want to let anyone take it away. For a better insight into this concept re-watch the Matrix and pay attention to the part where Morpheus talks about the people still plugged into the system being the enemy and fighting to defend it, great metaphor.
