Here we go! Keep in mind ratatat and MGMT are involved in this song. This song is addressing something that is going on with my generation specifically in the Midwest. I can relate so much to this lyrics over the past 3 years of my life it’s scary. Its starts with him “feelin lit, feelin right” at, “2 am [on a] summer night” driving drunk but he doesn’t care because he’s getting to experience all the things hes been wanting to and can now that he’s older(I live in Illinois and have made this drive to and from a party to many times). He’s on the pursuit of happiness and thinks partying is the gateway. At first no one could make him think otherwise. As the song progresses he becomes progressively unsure until finally he realizes it’s not the answer. “I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold, hey I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be good” “Imma do just what I want, lookin ahead no turnin back If I fall, if I die, know I lived it to the fullest If I fall, if I die, know I lived and missed some bullets” That’s his reasoning to continue the life style. When he’s talking about, “night terrors” and “5 am cold sweats waking up to the skies” I think he’s referring to drug and alcohol abuse. I think “You don't really care about the trials of tomorrow Rather lay awake in a path full of sorrow” he is being introspective about how he’s living life. Then he takes a step back “Pursuit of happiness, yeah I don’t get it, [but] Ill [still] be good” but is still stuck in the cycle. I feel like I’m at the end of this song over the last 3 years. I said to keep MGMT and RATATAT in mind because if you have ever been to a festival this attitude that happiness can be found this way is a very large issue. |

I think it’s about him. He feels that he has a talent and it shouldn’t be wasted with meaningless lyrics just to sell records like is popular in rap today (he talks about the subject throughout the record). He wants what he does to have meaning. He talks about how his, “My mind runs” but, “can never catch it” even when he’s trying (most people have been there). He looks to God for answers when he’s, “feeling so along” even though he knows, “the world’ll feel this nigga” because knowing that doesn’t change the feeling. So, “Play it back from the top if you [can] recognize real” what’s more real then emotion. And if I die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take But please don't cry, just know that I have made these songs for you And if I die before I wake I pray the lord my soul to take 'Cuz I'm ready for a funeral This could be addressed to God, the fans, family, friends, lovers only he knows. |

I read a few of the posts and chances are like most songs there is a personal life meaning to this song for him. Yet most songs are telling something separate from that. This song seems to be more relating to his lack of involvement within relationships. The girl he has found doesn't want meaning into what they are doing. "I asked her name she asked the time." shows that. The main issue for both people partaking in this song is that they are always looking for this zero connection sexual relation. Yet as things develop they realize the same patterns in these sexual endeavors and have become devoid of any emotional involvement. I want a lover I don't have to love I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck Where's the kid with the chemicals? I thought he said he'd meet me here but I'm not sure I got the money if you got the time He said, "It feels good" I said, "I'll give it a try" This is his emotions at the time. He's had these empty relations and the boy with the chemicals is his mind not letting out the emotions of caring about this person he is with. But as soon as they do he puts them in remission. Then my mind went dark He closed off the thoughts and emotion he almost let take hold. So she saying DO YOU LIKE TO HURT I DO I DO THEN HURT ME Read the lyrics as though it where a conversation and you will understand the story within the music and how it develops into the end result of her telling him that she has no want for love because all she knows from it anymore is the pain that in sues when it fails. That's what the story within the song is about but I still would love to know what connections he has to his song whether its based off a girl he knew or just an ideal in his head etc. |

The Becca and Because thing is easy to explain. At the start of the song he starts with, "we know i cant construct a poem, cause' words, like girls get bored and run". Hes talking about what he goes over later in the song with B is for believing you'd always be here for me. E is for everything, even when we'd see it though. C, C is for seeing through you, you are a fake, which brings me to A because, because, you always run away. and then i never finish phrases, i misspell, He was writing out a poem of why he shouldnt be with her/hates her and as he was writing it out with the word B.E.C........ He thought about it and noticed he should have just spelt out BECCA insted of because. Hence why he can't write poetry and never finishs phrases he misspells. |
