This is an amazingly beautiful and insightful song which is about how you need to constantly renegotiate the terms of how you mediate with each other in love, as you are both also always reconfiguring your individual selves each day. Love is not unconditional - rather it's a fragile thing that can only grow if each partner keeps working and accepts this risk of change, risk and dynamic reconfiguring. |

This is the sound of the hour of the wolf, when you can't sleep, and your soul's in the darkest place, and nothing makes sense and you feel like you just never belonged in this world or this life. |

Kind of obvious, this is about when you can't let go of someone who's hurt you badly and left you. And they've moved on without a goddamned second thought, and is now fucking someone else and somehow doesn't see any problem with staying somehow friends. They suck. |

On the surface, it could be the voice of the long-term abused in an abusive relationship, but I think it's rather about when you so desperately, absolutely need someone that you are willing to completely abnegate yourself in the hope that will make them be with you. |

For me, this is about when you feel so absolutely alone and lost inside, so far away from everyone and everything, that this distance only compounds your isolation and sense of oblivion from others.
The singer, though, has some notion/belief of the possible salvation and joy of love, but maybe their experience has had this polluted/corrupted by a lack of emotional closeness through perhaps abuse or the emptiness of casual involvements with people who didn't care about her. |
