this is about mental illness or OCD. when he is nervous, he counts tiles and checks the oven, which are two things people with OCD do. and the phobias he has could just be part of the anxiety he suffers. the chorus is a conversation he's having with his therapist.. he just wants to be normal and not have the problems he does. he used to rely on self-medication, don't a lot of people with OCD cut themselves? which would be considered a form of self-medication. the last part of the chorus is similar to the first part, only the stuff in parentheses is whats going on in his head. |

I always thought of the 'dark blue' as some type of overwhelming feeling that he has. since most of you are saying this song is relating to the relationship between him and his girlfriend, it could be the pressure he feels from said relationship. "I have, I have you breathing down my neck, breathing down my neck" i always viewed 'breathing down my neck' as stressing someone out. "I don't, don't know what you could possibly expect under this condition, so I'll wait, I'll wait for the ambulance to come, ambulance to come Pick us up off the floor, what did you possibly expect under this condition?" whatever is consuming him is making him distraught and disrupting his behavior, and disappointing those around him. I think, "i'll wait for the ambulance to come" means he'll wait for whatever his fix is, and make everything better. To relate it to a relationship, he'll wait for the troubles to stop. so.. he's being optimistic, about the situation. "And this flood, this flood is slowly rising up, swallowing the ground Beneath my feet; tell me how anybody thinks under this condition, so I'll swim, I'll swim as the water rises up, sun is sinking down and now All I can see is the planets in a row suggesting it's best that I Slow down, this night's a perfect shade of" pretty self exclamatory. whatever is bothering him is consuming him, and it seems like the world is ending but the world is telling him to calm down and everything will be okay. deep down, he knows everything will eventually be okay. "We were boxing, we were boxing the stars We were boxing,you were swinging from Mars And then the water reached the west coast And took the power lines, the power lines And it was me and you and the whole town underwater There was nothing we could do And it was dark blue" "we were boxing the stars" means they were on to of the world, and "we were swinging for mars" might mean he was trying to reach a different level, and then "the water reached the west coast" [hint hint, the west coast as in where he lives] and he was consumed by whatever it is that bothers him and messed everything up, and he couldn't do anything about it. [I honestly have no idea what the chorus means. lol] |
