It's almost like (and let's go by vague terms here) he's finally on the other side, lucid for a few minutes and he knows where he's been and where he's going, and about 2 minutes through the song he's trying to get her to come back and try to save him because he can't do it alone and she won't. This of course leads into Eraser where he's essentially on the way out, pissed off and trying to find a way to stop himself before he goes on rampage.
Closer is the beginning of the spiral, AWP the last chance to escape from it, and TDS the end of the spiral. |

Ummm... no. It's not.
If the character in TDS killed himself in the title track, then this is indeed a showing of remorse for everything that he'd done. Of course, The Fragile sounds like it's telling the same story but from the other person (Piggy, "my sweetest friend") so... yeah. |

If The Downward Spiral as a whole is about a man ultimately giving up caring and falling into oblivion, then Closer is the point where it begins. Mr. Self Destruct, Piggy, Heresy, and March of the Pigs are just the events leading up to the fall so we know the story. |

The patient realizes that he's been a bad person and doesn't care about that, but people are suicidal because of him. The only honorable way to save everyone is suicide, but when he does it they save him and make him live. He doesn't understand why they're doing all of the things they're doing and wants them all to just give up and leave him to die alone. |
