Only John Rzeznik knows what this song means to him and why he wrote it. That is the true meaning of the song and when it is the most powerful. However, there is something that happens when an artist pushes his art into the world ... at some point he loses ownership of it and since we don't have access to John, we are forced to find the meaning on our own. Then again, we are not forced, the meaning finds us. Whether or not it is congruent with Rzeznik's is irrelevant really, and I think he'd agree, as he says "I just write songs, and people do what they want with them."
so, that said, I was one person in a long line of people who this song comforted during a "tragic love period." However, knowing about his father and thinking about that with the song has given me a new perspective, and a new understanding and appreciation for the song that I have loved from the moment I heard it. |

this song is hard to listen to. I don't think the "voice calling out winter" and the "splinter inside him" are referencing the person he is in love with. The voice calling out winter "or death" and the splinter inside him or "the struggle on what to listen to, warm decembers or cold winters" ... he ultimately decides that he should "wait" ... if he makes a decision to hastily then whatever he decides will for sure be a mistake. |

| Plumb – Drugstore Jesus Lyrics

listening to this song 7 years ago I was fascinated by it, but I couldn't quite hammer out what it meant. To some, the meaning is apparently obvious. and to others a little harder to gather. I found my camp with the latter. I read an article and it's meanign made the most sense. It said, "drug store Jesus is about a leader who uses religion to not only give people what they want to hear, but also takes something in exchange for what he gives." So, said the artilce, TBN preachers or prosperity doctrine promoters more then likely would fall into this camp of turning christ into a drugstore and sacrificing the miracle. whatever the meaning it's a sobering song. |
