This song I can relate to so very on-the-target. (except that I'm a girl, and you know...) anyway, this part: never knew that everything was falling through That everyone I knew was waiting on a cue To turn and run when all I needed was the truth" That a whole bunch of his friends knew she didn't like him, when he was thinking of asking her out or something, and they left him hen he found out the truth. This part: "I'd rather run the other way than stay and see The smoke and who's still standing when it clears" I think, means that he rather 'run away' then see who are his real friends. "Everyone knows I'm in Over my head With eight seconds left in overtime She's on your mind" means that even with overtime, she's on his mind. He's 'over his head' because that girl is impossible.
