Thursday – Love Has Led Us Astray Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is pretty clearly about someone he loved dying. That's why they boarded & sold the house, gave away the possessions "with the ghost." More specifically, I want to say it was a family member or someone who was like a family member, because the leaves seem to be a reference to Autumn Leaves Revisited, which I heard him call a family lullaby at a concert.

The whole thing about love has led us astray I'm not sure about. Maybe he wasn't happy about where their relationship was when the person died. Like it started out great (cut from the cloth in perfect shape) but it fell apart over time (tied in a knot and left to fray) and he thinks it was the love that led them there.

Barenaked Ladies – Have You Seen My Love Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree that I think this is about a married couple (or at least two people who have been together for a long time) but she's changed and now he doesn't recognize her anymore and she's not the person he fell in love with so he's trying to cope.

When he says "And I swear that's her face / Did you bury the woman I love / And fall asleep in her space?" that gives me the impression it's not over yet and they're still living together.

I always imagine him lying in bed with her in the morning (with some sort of rocky relationship in the days/weeks prior) and she's still sleeping so he's just lying there in bed looking at her and the photos they have together on the nightstand and wondering what the hell happened.

This is a really sad but beautiful song.

Steel Train – Dakota Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, anna, I kinda thought the same thing. But more specifically, it really reminded the of the whole Matthew Shepard incident. I'm not sure if it's what he has in mind, and there are some things that don't seem to match up with that, but the way it reminds me off it is really eerie.

It's a really good song, nonetheless.

The Matches – To Build A Mountain Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright, well like I said, I'm pretty sure this song has a lot to do with the Iraq War.

Point one, is the obvious tip off line about oil and then all the allusions to deserts. Then I agree with wolf_notthe_devil that the 'mirage' they refer to would be the supposed WMDs that turns out never existed.

Then in the next verse I think the wolves playing devils on TV is supposed to be Iraqi terrorists. You know, like maybe a lot of this is just propaganda we're being fed on TV. Of course the unpleasant Cuban bay stay would then be Guantanamo Bay, where prisoners have been illegally tortured.

And I agree, 'fox' must be a reference to the FOX communications network. I must admit, that's a wondrously written line, as foxes have a reputation of being sly and underhanded, and at the same time, it fits what they want to say about the network. I gather they're saying the news coverage of us 'liberating' cities is portrayed as success and progress, when really we're destroying where these people live.

(I'll take this point to say to suckyourpitydownx that there's no way you can believe MSNBC and CNN are more biased than Murdoch's Fox, which is notoriously right-wing in every way. You must be either brainwashed or delusional)

Following these lines, making sense of the first verse I'm interpreting the line about statues to have something to do with the fall of the Saddam statue some 4 odd years ago, as the FOE of tomorrow's statues would be that missing statue. As for my favorite, the opening line, maybe he's saying how Bush might come away smelling like roses because he's got the resources? I don't know, the first verse and the line about the grassy knoll I'm still trying to fit right.

Overall, I'd say the message of this song comes out in the very sarcastic chorus. Of course the best way to build a mountain is to dig a hole, the exact opposite. Basically saying this war is a huge failure.

Wow, I guess I'm not the only one who was getting the vibe a lot of this song is about the Iraq War. I've got a considerable amount of analysis to lend to this argument; I'll list when I have the time.

Straylight Run – I Don't Want This Anymore Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm with starcrossedlovers on this one. Waaay too repetitive. They've got such great lyrics and their songs are all so well put together. With this one though, I either forget I'm listening to music halfway through, or I just get sick of the same few lines again and again and again and again and again. Far too long and drawn out if you ask me. It's the only song of theirs I've left off of my SLR playlist. It's just not worthy.

I don't know what some of you against Michelle. The way this version gets going with all three of them singing is incredible, and the variety Michelle brings to it is half of what makes it so great.

I have to ask, am I the only person who has this song where it abruptly cuts out at the end? It drives me nuts, because it's so incredible and I want the whole thing!

Silverstein – Forever And A Day Lyrics 18 years ago
"I hope every time he breaks your heart you think of me and how I was to you."

God, I love that line. Anyways, pretty clear what this song is about. I really like how they recite the poem in the end. To be honest I'm a little perplexed at how few comments this song has.

Silverstein – Here Today, Gone Tomorrow Lyrics 18 years ago
I was just listening to this song when it all of a sudden I realized this song was about John Beatz. I had always assumed this song was about the family members they mentioned losing in the AP article they had, like x740xbreakdownsx, but I just put the pieces together in my head.

To expand on what mtown said, I think it's important to mention that Silverstein was on tour with Bayside when that happened.

Very touching and sad song, especially for me after realizing who it was about.

RIP Beatz

Plain White T's – Hate (I Really Don't Like You) Lyrics 19 years ago
You guys are stupid. Not every song has to be incredibly deep. Yeah, I like a lot of that kind of music too, but that's not what they were trying for with this song. They're just keeping it simple. And yeah, they use really more than once, so what? No, that doesn't mean they have no vocabulary, they did it for a reason. I think this song is a touch facetious in the way they went about it.

And to the people going, "guys suck because..." and "no, girls suck because..." you might as well just shut it. Both sexes have their share of assholes. Stop generalizing.

I don't get what the big deal is about this song and album, I like them just as much as the previous ones. *shrug*

Motion City Soundtrack – Indoor Living Lyrics 19 years ago
I've always thought about this song in the same way that The_Fighter explained it. He doesn't want a relationship because he's just going to let them down with his life of indoor living, which isn't much to talk about.

And to sneef2010, I was watching an interview with them on YouTube and they said when they were writing it the lyrics were "here's to every one night stand" but when they were practicing to record the song someone thought it sounded like "here's to everyone that's dead" and they liked that better, so that's what they went with. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure that you're right.

Thursday – The Lovesong Writer Lyrics 19 years ago
This is such an amazing song. Definitely my favorite off ACBTLD and second all time (to Dying in New Brunswick).

In the podcast Thursday put out for this song Geoff says this song is about (obviously) lovesongs and the people who write them. He says that lovesongs today aren't even about love anymore but more ownership.

Part of it is about writing music so personal it's hard to play it for anyone else, like a guy Geoff knew (and I'm sure he can relate to it on some level too given the nature of his songs).

In the podcast Geoff cites a piece of writing by Jonathan Lethem entitled something to the effect of Utopian and compares lovesongs to a writer in the piece who creates this sheep character who's suicidal and eventually the sheep comes back to the writer and says, as Geoff so eloquently puts it, "Well you made me like this, so like, thanks...douchebag."

He connects this to today's lovesongs where the songwriters make these songs with no regard to the people who hear them on the radio and how callous it is. That's what I got out of the podcast, anyways.

To explain the queen of spades part for MasterKismet, this is what I take from it: In the game of Hearts (you know, the card game) the object is to have the fewest points. During play, for each card of hearts that you get you also get one point on your score. The queen of spades, however, is a special card worth 13; equal to all of the hearts put together. So basically I think he is comparing the person in the lovesong (or whoever the "you" is) to the queen of spades and how terrible she is. Sorry I couldn't explain that more eloquently, haha.

I'm in the same position as salparadise04. I saw the movie Stay and was like, what is that song they're listening to in the car? I really like it, so I looked it up and found this great song. :)
