Love this song. It's definitely a smart one which gives us a lot of insight into this 'friend' through subtle means. For example, While the Rockford files lyrics are hilarious and seemingly light in nature, they tell us this friend just sits around wasting his life to unimportant things like reruns ( as this show was on full daytime viewing at the time this song was written) and is quite nonchalant about it even though he has no real reason or excuse to be this way. His life style is completely unearned while he takes advantage of what allows him to be this way. It really brings to light how the " you're my hero, I confess" line is total sarcasm and negative in nature even though musically it's quite the opposite. |

I don't think this song is meant to be taken literally. The way I read it its about being caught up in the ills of society. The key, to me, represents the realization that one can escape this paralysis by living differently (or spiritually) -- by not being apart of it anymore. |
