The Jakes – Cough Syrup Lyrics 17 years ago
Tired and fed up with life. Been told that things will get better, with help or therapy or whatever, something's he's lumping into one general cure-all, called "cough syrup", and is just saying that he always seems to be one dose or spoon of it away from being cured or at least feeling better. The other words and lines are describing the sickness and the feeling and distorted view of life (or perhaps the clearer view, whichever stance you wish to take).

At least that's what I think.

Never Shout Never! – Dare 4 Distance Lyrics 17 years ago
The girl that he loves or has a relationship with has moved to college or for whatever reason, and he knows the distance is going to put a strain on the relationship but they know they can possibly work things out.

This distance is all he ever thinks about, and she always talks about what made her fall in love with him in the first place, and they know they wont be able to make up any time lost between them.

Oh, and they only see each other on Friday nights :)

Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics 17 years ago
I love how people try to claim what a band would or wouldn't write about. Like Modest Mouse, Isaac or whoever is responsible for writing whatever songs in the band's catalog is too good for "simple" subjects like failed relationships or selling out. Get over yourself, even the best artists can put seemingly petty subjects in a brilliant form of lyrics.

With that said, I've never thought of this song to mean anything BUT some sort of failed relationship. Whether it be with a band mate, a music label, a girlfriend, etc., there was a relationship that went sour and this is the response.

Go ahead and attack me. I'd love to hear why I have to be wrong about my personal interpretation of a song.

Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics 17 years ago
I haven't read every single comment, but the general idea seems to be it's either about Bush, America, both, or arrogance and everything relating to it.

I interpret the song to mean that as a child, to an adult, we defeat the impossible. We ride bikes without handlebars and slowly see what power we have. We, as humans (and not necessarily Americans), have conquered what we thought couldn't be done, or hadn't even thought of (guide missiles by satellite, shoot somebody at a distance through a telescope) and eventually we see how our power can go too far (end a planet in a holocaust).

We truly have control over our own lives, from learning and memorizing songs, to what we do in our every day routine, to how the people around us have their effect on our actions.

Forever the Sickest Kids – Indiana Lyrics 17 years ago
the only part I'm unsure of is what he says between "telling me constantly" and "I'll be just fine"

it sounds like he repeats himself but i'm not sure.
its something to start on though.

and for what i think it means:
This guy has lost his girlfriend to distance. She didn't wanna try it out but he convinced her otherwise, and now she's telling him he'll be fine without her and he disagrees. She wants to break things off because of the distance but he doesn't want to. For the "over and done.." bit, I'm thinking that once they do break up, because he's expecting to, he won't be able to get over her. No matter what she tells him about getting over her, he's always going to feel the same way.

Brand New – Handcuffs Lyrics 17 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks he's saying:

"You could lay on your back and be beaten
You could put up your fists and fly
You could try and get away now.
Get away now."

I hear a pretty distinct "fl-" sound, rather than "fight."

And to me, this song is just about getting revenge or wanting to put your pain on someone else because you're tired of fighting to keep yourself in a good mood. Songs don't require a deep penetration into band member's personal lives or a questioning of their sanity. I write some pretty fucked up things myself but I don't feel that off-center or anything.

But in a gist, it's just about finding a sadistic way to vent your anger. Drowning babies, robbing houses, or even hurting yourself could all be answers. But he's opting for an easier way out, and that's by writing about it.

Kevin Devine – Murphy's Song Lyrics 18 years ago
thanks :). and its not whimpering, "He is whimpering taps now" doesn't really make sense, its the whimperings that's tapping, not tapping in a whimpering way (simple verb/adverb mix-up)

Mates of State – Goods (All in Your Head) Lyrics 18 years ago
As I sit here listening to it now, I think it's just about letting go.
Watching the "music video", if we can all agree, is the one with the guy in a green shirt just dancing around, eventually being joined by others, it seems as if he was holding in then just let go and went on out.

"Story with fantastic lies..", "shelter plainly deny..", all these can allude to hiding a true self. A confessional song, basically saying how we need to count up what all we have (the goods), and enjoy being ourselves and not act so down and out.

As for skanking art (I personally thought of the ska-dance form, but stealing sounds mroe appliable), perhaps it's one of those random bridges an artist or group writes or wrote and didn't fit anywhere else so they placed it here.

Keep in mind, and this goes for almost every song imagineable, that not every lyric is centered or played around one central theme. It can be a combination of random thoughts, or random feelings, phrases heard throughout the day, etc. that's just all coming out on paper, put to an electronic beat (in this case), and sung.

Art for art's sake, people, art for art's damn sake.

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Barely Breathe Lyrics 19 years ago
i love love love this song.. to me, its about making the most of life. don't rely on everybody else and restrict yourself to only what you know. there's not always an answer to everything, and sometimes, you just gotta take risks. some people believe the other, and turn ugly, thus burning the beauty from their eyes. they dont see what he sees, the freedom and happiness.

manchester orchestra is amazing

Brand New – Degausser Lyrics 19 years ago
I'll try my best to explain what this song means line by line:

"Goodbye to sleep
I think this staying up is exactly what i need
Take apart your head
Take apart the counting and the flock it has bred"

Simple, he can't sleep. But staying up is what he needs, so he has time to "take apart your head", to think of every little thing possible. The flock and the counting is an allusion to the counting sheep, something people say helps when you're trying to sleep.

"Goodbye to love
It’s just a ride that will push you
Up right against the wall
Take apart your head...right against the wall...
Chew it up and swallow it"

He's tired of love, it hasn't treat him right before, and it just corners you "right against the wall." Chew it up and swallow, a way to just get rid of it.

"(Does everybody really need to know everyone?
Do you really think you're really a part of it?
And is your army really one of some thousands?
And will you declare war on the loony bin?)"

Now this is a part where he seems to be challenging God. "Does everybody really need to know everyone", does everybody in heaven really need to agree of everything, not have his or her flaws and differences? And the army, it's said in the Bible that God will declare war on Hell (loony bin) and with an army of thousands defeat Satan once and for all. Jesse is in a way challenging God, questioning the things he's been told.

"But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right"

I bet that you're running, talking to his inner demons. They're afraid of what he'll find out. If what he's saying is indeed alkaline, it could mean he's been sleeping great. Research in "sleeping in alkaline" (a Google search helped) showed that raised alkaline levels in the blood help "heal" the body and sleep better. So there may be a connection there. He'll never shake the feeling of God, his thoughts and questions of religion and God and his believing or not. Therefore, he'll never say/do/get anything right because he’s never going to know, never going to have a definite answer.

"Goodbye you liar
Well, you sipped from her cup
But you don't own up to anything
And you think you will inspire"

Talking to the demons. The only relevance to the sipping from a cup is a Bible verse, Jeremiah 51:7, and to summarize the verse, the world drank the wine from Babylon's cup and became drunk and went mad. So possibly, the demons drank from the cup and in their fury are trying to convince others to do the same. Other than that, I’m not sure about this verse.

"When I arrive will God be waiting and pacing around his throne?
Will he feel a little Old Testament?
And will he celebrate with fire and brimstone
Yeah, I admit, I am afraid of the reckoning."

He's questioning God again, asking him how he'll feel when he arrives in Heaven. He’s afraid of the reckoning, what the truth is. This also helps the Jeremiah claim, for that book is in the Old Testament. Interesting side note: Jeremiah 51:3 states "..let the archer bend his bow..", possible allusion to the song Archers.

"Take apart your head...yeah, I wish I could inspire
Take apart the demon up in the attic to the left"

He wishes he could do the inspiring demons do, leave the print they do in people. Or possibly inspire like God does, leave such an impression like he does. The only thing I can think of about “the devil in the attic to the left” line is the mention that this whole song is about a demon that supposedly lives in Jesse's friend's attic. Also interesting to note is that "The demon in the attic to the left" is mentioned in a Queens Of The Stone Age song, "Bloody Hammer". Other than this, I can't think of any logical or far-out reasoning to this line besides the aforementioned.

"But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right...right...right (I'm on my own)"

Again, like I said above. He's on his own as in he has to make all this own choices, God won't help in his choices.

"(Goodbye my love
You wait right here, and they will come and pick you up
I've been on pause
But I’m shaking off the rust
I’ve lost my charge
I've been degaussed
I've been degaussed
I've been degaussed)"

Goodbye my love, goodbye my affection. He doesn’t know love anymore because all he thought he knew he’s unsure of. But if he just waits, he’ll eventually know the truth. He gave up on trying to know the answers, but he’s trying again. He's lost his charge, his energy, further supporting the alkaline theory above. He's lost his charge in the since, lost sleep and memory. Degaussing is a term used for erasing memory, mostly off hard disks and such, so he may be forgetting all that he knew about God, or thought that he knew about God.

"Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Please say, "I don't mind you under my skin
And I’ll let your bad parts in. the bad parts in"
When we were made we were set apart
But life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
The storm is coming
The storm is coming in"

This could be an allusion to God; he wants God to let him sleep. He loves God so much, but his head hurts because he can't quite figure out why. He wants God to accept his bad parts, his flaws, because Jesse desires to be perfect but he can't. Therefore, when he's made (we addresses everyone else in the world, more or less all humans) they were set apart, because he was the worse. He gets the bad marks in life. Some people believe life is merely a test God gives, to see if they can pass or not to enter Heaven. A saint gets the job to write his sins, again a comparison to his flaws to another's perfection. The storm could be his over-thinking, his over-analyzing, how deep he thinks. The rush of thoughts that over-flood him, and he can't quite make sense of it all.

"But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)"

See above explanation.

"Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I’ll let the bad parts in the bad parts in
Well, you’re my favorite bird and when you sing
I really do wish that you would wear my ring
But no matter what they say, I am still the king
The storm is coming
The storm is coming in."

The things that change here are the lines "Well, you’re my favorite bird and when you sing. I really do wish that you would wear my ring. But no matter what they say, I am still the king". I agree with an above stated argument that this is God saying He loves Jesse, and he wishes he would become an angel. And no matter what the demons say about doubting God and trying to inspire Jesse to think otherwise, God's always king.

In all, this song is about Jesse's fight with a realization on just who God is and what He does. He's questioning him, questioning the love God claims he has, all that.

I knew this song's title was a Biblical reference, and to me, it's really interesting to see minimum Bible reference from YFW and then here comes The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me, where the whole album is about religion and whatnot.

Very nice. Kudos Jesse and crew.
