it seems like this song is about trying to be happy by changing the way you look.

He says "ask our neighbors, I would know..." over and over, meaning that he knows about how other people view him.

ya?

Hey! you forgot: "I remember when my mother would get sick, she would vomit all over the kitchen, she would vomit on the tables and on the countertops, and in the refrigerator. and uh, oh when we called the dog, the dog would come in and slip on the vomit.

Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics 19 years ago
finally someone is starting to get it! thanks peacelove. i thought i might also add maybe sufjan had made fun of his friend "oh how i meant to tease him... oh how i meant no harm" maybe sufjan had made fun of his friend and called him a wimp because he was scared of the predatory wasp. he might have even kissed him to make fun of him like: "ha your gay! here:" and kissed him. (hey we're all mean sometimes) and now he feels really really bad about it because it's all his fault his bud is gone. and the predatory wasp is haunting him in his room. sufjan also expresses some fatige at telling this tale " i can tell you the telling gets old..." im thinking maybe he's tired of people thinking this is a gay song?

Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics 19 years ago
AAARRRGGG! i have to get this off my chest. for all you folks who insist that sufjan is gay. Two things:

1. you aggle and ooh and ahh over sufjan being such an amazing musical and poetic talent (which he is) so don't you think he might write a song about this:

He and his brother (or friend) are playing a game and his friend is upset, so naturally he wishes to comfort him. he runs and kisses the hurt spot, just like all children are taught to do by thier parents. so he reminisces about an important time in his youth, which we have all done at one time or another, and thinks about his old friend. (or estranged brother) Part of me thinks that he may have freaked out his friend because he kissed him. maybe the friend was older and may i say "corrupted" by the world and knew the third meaning to a kiss. Besides the childhood innocence of it. the type of love that may be the most valuable on this earth is not sexual but brotherly, family love. the kind you feel towards someone you have known literally your whole life. This is the type of love you feel towards a grandparent, or a favorite smell, or a memory. It's so hard to explain this, im not sure if im hitting it just right, but im thinking that this is what sufjan might be trying (and succeeding) in accomplishing. if we could all just filter out the sexual hints and phrases that we try to look for then maybe we coud focus on something else. something more powerful than any of that. THAT is what i think sufjan might try to write about.

2. sufjan is a Christian. There is debate on this subject specifically, but i want to believe it so bad. there is something that makes me want to hold on to it because i like to hear exellent musical talent that is christian in nature because that is truly rare. his words speak out to me because they are coming from someone who (hopefully ) believes the same way i do. I also understand that some gays claim to be christians and if that is the case then sufjan may have a reason to write about his convictions of sin and all that. (which he has multiple times).

This is what i think the song means. All i am trying to say is that sufjan would probably write about something else besides some homosexual memory.
