Also, when they did it live at Give it a Name this weekend, it REALLY sounded like alkaline. But I know they like to vary their live versions form album versions so I don't know. They also said, before they played this, 'this song is about how you shouldn't listen to any of the bands here tonight. Go home and throw away all your CDs, throw away our CDs and make your own music. Think for yourself.' |

acoustic version? awesome. alkaline is also used to preserve pages of old books and stuff - perhaps a reference to not fading, staying young etc? |

Francesco di Bartolommeo di Zanobi del Giocondo was the person that the girl from the Mona Lisa painting married. He was 35, she was 16. He asked Da Vinci to paint her. So, basically, the tango of Mona Lisa? |

'seven loved you so much' reminds me of a stuck needle on a record. like what subsub is saying, their memories end there and the needle gets stuck. you can hear in the way he sings it that after more repetitions the frustration is building up - 'but i can't take it'. 'never have to be down to earth' - they're going through a tragedy, they don't have to stay calm or hold in their feelings for the sake of social interaction. 'never have to live together on this piece of dirt' - from that, i get that in their eyes, their daughter deserved so much better than the mud and unclean things that surrounded her. 'never have to find my baby in the crowd' - she's not just 'one of the crowd', she's their daughter and she's special. she's deserving of a better place where she's not lost amongst everyone else. 'i should be laughing right now' - the backing singing is like the internal voice. it's ok to appear grieving to everyone else, but the voice inside of her parents is telling them anything to force a silver lining on them, no matter how cold. amazing song. |

yeah, i think 'satire' doesn't quite fit. i think it works so well because of the contrast. 'sparks and shining dragons' are the stretching of the imagination; how noble and knight-like you feel when you're in love. the 'empty coke cans' etc are the everyday things as well - being in love doesn't just make you imagine fairytale stuff, but the real life stuff too. i totally agree with funkyseaweed. i love the choice of words: 'majesty' and 'poetry' are such fairytale things, it really makes it work. i mean, we don't live in castles and there aren't any dragons, but if a caravan is a castle to someone then it's a part of their fairytale. |

I'm not a Morrissey fan but Brand New are. Stumbled across the lyrics to I'm Not Sorry and found: I'm slipping below the water line Reminds me of this song, since I reckon it's unusual for 'slip' to be used in that sense. Nice though. Also, I'm with degaussedboy in that it's: LET'S [slip in the alkaline]... second line, second chorus. |
