Rogue Wave – Kicking The Heart Out Lyrics 18 years ago
I noticed a lot of collegiate imagery in this song. "Talking about another degree," "celebrity drop-outs," "25 for an hour."

I don't think this is a coincidence. I think it is about a college relationship where the girl is ambitious. She is talking about getting another degree (doctorate, medicine?). Her ambition is getting in the way of their relationship. Ultimately he feels that she is wasting her youth (25 for an hour) and thinks that she is essentially having an affair with ambition rather than dedicating herself to him.

The Shins – Know Your Onion! Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow this is a cryptics song. A lot of good takes on it, here, though. This is what I got:

"but when they're parking their cars on your chest
you've still got a view of the summer sky
to make it hurt twice when your restless body
caves to its whims
and suddenly struggles to take flight..."
I took the "parking cars on the chest" metaphor to be discussing death and sin. Since people are buried facing upwards, a car parked on a long-forgotten grave would be parked on the deceased's chest. The part about the view of the sky...my take is that the person has sinned and perceives that he will go to hell. The reason I say this is because "the restless body caves to its whims and suddenly struggles to take flight," meaning, it fails to ascend to heaven. "you've still got a view of the summer sky
to make it hurt twice" also adds to this, since the first occurance of the sin was painful, and its consequence (denial to heaven) is mockery and just as painful. The dead guy is just staring up at heaven in vain.

"and i got on with making myself.
the trick is just making yourself."
The speculation here is that this is about masturbation. I tend to agree. The fact that the song is presumably about being a teenager, and the phrase "I got on" makes it seem like this was used as an alternative to sex.

"three thousand miles north east
i left all my friends at the morning bus stop shaking their heads.
"what kind of life you dream of? you're allergic to love.""
Some people have said this may be about moving, but I take it differently. "I left all my friends shaking my heads" doesnt mean that he departed with his friends shaking their heads, just that he caused them to shake their heads. Its the same as if I said "I left my friends cracking up." The "morning bus stop" is the school bus stop, or, perhaps, a bus for work caught in the morning. I just kept with the teenager thing.

Putting all of that together:

I think its about a teenager's sexual strife. He tries unsuccessfully to get with girls, but can't, so he reverts to masturbation, music, and reading. The masturbation he regards as a sin, and feels guilty because of it.

Cute Is What We Aim For – Crush Lyrics 19 years ago
Defnitely about a crush this guy has on a girl who is pretty cheap. While he may like the more sophisticated (read: less whorish) girls, he still likes this girl. So, instead of giving her up, he is ignorant of her cheap ways and pretends she isnt that way (I like them pricey, so trick me...).

Cold War Kids – Hang Me Up to Dry Lyrics 19 years ago
Definitely about a girl leading on a guy. Maybe "I'm pearly like the whites of your eyes" if a reference to the guy's innocence. His relationship with this girl seems to be pretty corrupting, since they are getting dirty in the mud, tarnishing his whiteness. He gets tired of this, and tells her to hang him up to dry, for better or for worse.
