after closing my doors, pulling the shades, climbing the walls, and listening to this great song i started to think that it could be about chris's battles with depression and drug abuse during his younger teenage years. the drug use allows him to temporarily forget his problems and shame. the 'over' in overfloater implies excess. it's not excess in the sense of an overdose on drugs, but rather, in the sense that the drug use is overwhelming to his young mind. he is also overfloating 'alone.' alone, depressed, and abusing drugs to escape problems can really take its toll on a young teenager. |

hey, where are the comments on this one?? cmon people!
anyways, i agree with you that this is about the holocaust, but i think it's from the perspective of a nazi, not a prisoner.
"I don't care if it takes some time
I'm gonna make it right"
to a nazi, making it right involves killing all jews. that may take time...
"I don't care if it tastes like poison
Rip the legs from the thighs
Feed the prison, save the eyes"
the nazi knows that his actions are wrong, but he must ignore this by thinking of the prison and its prisoners as an object, ignoring the actual living beings (the eyes). |

no code,
its interesting that this reminded you of soundgarden. the first time i heard it, it reminded me of soundgarden's "loud love" especially with that little scream in the beginning. after more listens, it doesn't really remind of that song anymore...but at first it certainly did |

its so pathetic that no1 comments on screaming trees songs. they're so underrated. i guess everyone is too busy commenting on emo bands and rap music... |

i find it strange how the music sounds so upbeat, but the lyrics seem to be somewhat cynical or sarcastic as someone said before. hmmm |

i agree that this song is about conformity. its such a great song to end soundgarden's final album, as it really seems to conclude the way chris feels about society. a lot of his other songs seemed to be about his general dislike for what our society has become (i'm thinking of songs like blow up the outside world, limo wreck, black hole sun here, etc...) i guess he really just wanted to get away from life here in america where everyone is pretty much a clone and where anyone who is different isn't accepted. he certainly seems happier living in france now...
i think this song, more than any other soundgarden song, shows the direction chris wanted to go with his music. i really could picture this song on his euphoria morning album.
and i realllllly wish this song were longer, but it does sound really cool when on repeat |
