That's weird. I was so sure this song was about the tragic death of Jeff Buckley... He went swimming randomly in his clothes in the Wolf River one day back in 1997 and drowned. There was a lot of talk about it being a suicide, though it was ruled an accidental drowning. "The ship has lost its sail" refers to drowning, and "I don't know if you meant it/ but you did yourself in" refers to the mysterious nature of his death. Also, the lyrics "even fancy things/ have finally lost their charm/ wine and diamond rings/ they never get you anymore" fit with his lavish style and subject matter - he even has a song called "Lilac Wine." Doesn't anybody else think this song is about Jeff Buckley? |

I actually heard somewhere that this song is about a transvestite, hence the James Dean Monroe gender-bending name. "Miscreation" would fit this meaning because it could be taken both as Miss Creation and the sarcastic statement that he is a miscreation. Plus, if it's about a crossdresser, that makes the image of the wind blowing up his coat reflect the famous image of the wind blowing up Marilyn Monroe's dress (especially since he's adopted part of her name) - and that's just awesome :) |

| Ani DiFranco – Manhole Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Don't have much to say except that as soon as I heard the guitar for this song, before the lyrics started, I understood the title "manhole." The guitar and vocals sound like they're reverberating from the depths of a well or a manhole. Awesome guitar effect - so haunting and organic sounding. | |
| Ani DiFranco – What If No One's Watching? Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Lici, I think the first verse and the stuff about movies fits with the idea that "no one's watching." Movies are meant to be watched, and if life was a movie, God would be the watcher. However, life sometimes lacks the meaning and glory of the movies. Instead of the "sunset" and the camera panning away, the sky is as grey as the buildings below it. To me, this song is about the absurdity of living your life as if you're constantly being watched by some viewer critiquing your every move. Life shouldn't consist of pre-written dialogue - what you should say and what you should do. It's ridiculous to live your life like you're some character in a movie. In the third stanza, it's like the singer is being ridiculed for not playing her part in life right. She's not sticking to the dialogue, not saying or doing the right things. But she doesn't care because she's living her life for herself, not for some invisible viewer. I don't consider this an anti-God song. It's just about the desire to live your life the same way whether or not God exists. |
