| Duran Duran – The Reflex Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Masturbation? Please. I think the drug theory is plausable, but there is so much irrelevant stuff. My take? I rekon this song started off with a glimour of meaning, and went of at a tangent. As with many songs, this song has lyrics that are tailored simply to fit with the last one. 'Why don't you use it, try not to bruise it, buy time don't loose it' is typical lyrical padding out. I know, I use it a lot in my own songs. I personally Imagine this song being written around the 'Ta Na Na Na' hook, which is a stroke of genius and possibly the best device the band ever used. Its the single thing that turned me on to Duran Duran - for a long while their image put me off. Unfortunately I feel Duran's whole image set them up to date very quickley, right from being named after the evil mastermind out of 'Barberella' to the random ameteur video camera in the 'A View To Kill', and I think it detracts from their music somewhat. Wait a second, I'm getting off the subject. Yeh, I think the lyrics really were built around the phrase 'The Reflex'. It is a brilliant name for a song, but there's very little you can draw from it, so very cleverly, Duran have simply not bothered to write lyrics, just string toghether a load of phrases that are whatever you make them. So as we have seen, you can derive anything you want from it. Like Bohemian Rhapsody, everybody has a theory, but if Mercury had ever let out what that was about it would be a complete anticlimax. This song is a blank canvas on which you can paint anything you like. I like the masturbation theory, but there is no indication for that. As masturbation songs though, how about Pictures Of Lily by The Who? What a fantastic record. |

| Franz Ferdinand – Lynsey Wells Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I am very relieved that there are still people out there who can make records like this. Both sides of this single are exactly what I look for in a record. Incedentally, I bought this on record, and I advise anyone who has a player to do the same, because I've seen the CD and I wouldn't have njoyed it as much. Regarding the meaning? All I can get form this song is that this Lynsey Wells character is practical and beautiful, clearley very old fashioned, or the song is set in the past. I love the lyric 'LP Records in your little hands, put them on your little dansette for a dance'. And of course on the sleeve there is a girl (presumably lynsey) on ice skates. I imagined her primerily as a dancer, although thats pure speculation. Another thing about the cover, there are 5 pictures of this girl on ice skates, each of them looking up the skirt of the next. I'm not kidding, take a look, its uncanny. its either a laugh on the behalf of the designers or a very amusing mistake. I hope that isn't just me, I certainly feel very guilty for noticing it. Back to the meaning, I can really relate to whoever wrote it, because I myself have a very critical mind and I know who it feels to meet someone who is continually happy and think 'how on earth do you keep up that smile? Is it a facade? How can you trust people so readily' and I think that is what this song is about. Just the admiration of someone who seems invincabley cheerful. A lot of people have been saying this sounds like the Beatles, although I disagree. It has a beatlesy feel, mainly when compared with songs in the charts because the Beatles level of complexity has become very unfashionable in comparison to the more repatative and riff based music. I do however, find it slightly reminicent of Queen's '39 - anyone heard that song? Not a criticism, but its that kind of style. I like the bass drum sound, and the chugging palm muted guitar doubled with the snare. I also like the little chorus at the end. Is that a ukalele? I'm not sure, but that IS a Beatlesy touch. Also I'm not sure what kind of keyboard that is in the chorus but its refreshing. I'm not sure whether its a poor pressing of the record, but the chorus vocals seems to have a rather strange effect on them, which gives it a nice feel. Nyway, all in all a glorious double A side which makes me want to host a protest rally outside HMV going 'Bring Back The 45 rpm Single'. |
