I thought the 'planes' part was just a metaphor for life just "flying by." I always find the chorus amazing, just imagining that happening would be, I don't even know, just saddening and shocking. It might be kinda fun to see though. haha |

Pretty much what everyone said. And to FutonRev: they are from canada 1(the arctic references), and 2 John is a very smart man. The hospital references could have just been an experience he's had or just the symbolism of someone passing away. And to Anapholes: the documents part could be him saying that he feels his songs are "childish" (kindergarten anthems) and that he prefers those aspects of his life over romance? |

Yes it is. And a rafter beam references hanging yourself and a broken bottle references cutting wrists maybe. All means of escapes. Especially how he then goes on about "leading empty lives."
It could just be a thought of completely escaping for a person. When I read the title, for some reason, I always think of a "meeting someone new." |

| The Weakerthans – Plea from a Cat Named Virtute Lyrics

John K. is brilliant. The way he can write songs of despair and then ones like this, about being "strong" just boggles my mind. I love it. I think this song, outside of the cat's perspective, is about hope and the realization that we all need a good "bite" in order to come too. A wake up call. I wish there were more hopefull uplifting songs like this one. heh |

I love his voice with especially in this song. And I agree about the "love for the city." That's what I kinda thought too, but what exactly is the "1000 sharpened elbows in the underground" refer too/mean? It puzzles me. |

I heard about these guys maybe 6 years ago now and this is one of the most powerful. The atmosphere of the song with the voice and lyrics is phenominal. Personally, of coures this is just my opinion, I feel the song is about A relation ship that, obviously, ended "some one choose, who's left and who's LEAVING." and he was ultimately the one who left to return "home." He's trying to forget about the relationship by remembering the past and the good things he used to know. The strangers could be people he grew up with or remembers from years ago. With that being said he can't get over the relationship and thinks about what she left him with: blankets, matches, pain in my chest (heartbreak). And the herat break being the best part of lonely he tries to find ways to distract him from this feeling by "tinkering" or as trotski said, quick fixes. Ultimately, though, he finds himself thinking about her "wait in 4/4 time", which is a neat line being the time signature of the song, and the only thing that he knows, for sure about this person, is that she is obeying the lines of the road.
If that makes much sense to anyone. I can't really do the song justice and convey the message in words. To each their own. |
