Wonderful explanations about this song! It's beautiful how lyrics can mean such different things to everyone! In my opinion, this song is Delilah's apology to Samson for what she has done to Samson. She truly loved him and wishes that she did not have to cut his hair. In addition, it is her wish of how their love could have turned out. "You are my sweetest downfall, I loved you first", -- She is telling him that he is the first man she has ever truly loved. "Beneath these sheets of paper lies my truth" -- The truth refers to what she did (cut his hair), and the sheets of paper are documents such as the Bible, history books, etc. that recount the story. Although, this line is so regretful... she wishes she wasn't remembered for this. "I have to go, I have to go" -- She is so regretful in this line too, as she feels she must leave her only true love. She is almost apologizing to him by explaining she thought she had to do cut his hair. "And history books forgot about us and the bible didnt mention us, the Bible didnt mention us, not even once" -- Now, this is where her wish comes in. I believe she is combining an apology (above) with what she wishes could have happened. She wishes the whole thing didn't happen and that they could still be together. Now, if you don't know the story of Samson and Delilah, Delilah constantly begged Samson to tell her his weakness. Before he finally tells her that it is his hair, he makes up three lies. Each time, she has an army ready to harm him in the morning. However, Samson still loves Delilah and ultimately tells her his weakness. This shows how much Samson loved Delilah. He loved her enough to make himself completely vulnerable. I think that's why "he told me that I'd done alright and he kissed me 'til the morning light". He loved her enough to forgive anything she did to him. That is the reason she is so regretful. "We couldn't bring the columns down, we couldn't destroy a single one" -- In their relationship, Delilah and Samson could not overcome their ultimate fate. Again, she is very regretful. She is apologizing to him that she couldn't change her agenda and wishing that everything had turned out differently. |
