great lyrics and beat, and i don't think he was necessarily trippin'. like good songwriters, he touches on a few different things here without being too direct: enjoying life in the here and now but not wasting your time or life ("no eternal reward..."); love of music (i think "texas radio" refers to those great border radio stations playing blues, soul, and good ol' r'n'r for all the young, mostly white (wasp) teens like morrison in the 50's and early 60's. basically, his tribute to rock and roll. |

one of the saddest songs i've ever heard about thinking back on an old love. this ain't about drugs, man, it's about the heart. although he does mention being "too high." emmylou harris's version of this (with earle on guitar and the countoff) will make you cry. |

right. but i don't think he literally killed her. suicide, baby, suicide. and he's come back for the funeral to say goodbye. the "perfect world" description may be sarcastic, or just the drugs talking. reminds me a little of lucinda williams/emmylou harris's "sweet old world", which is even sadder than this. |
