Actually this was written by Joe King, co-founder of The Fray and guitarist/back up vocal for the band. He wrote this song for his sister during some tough times. |

When I heard this song I thought it was possibly an affair. The lyrics seem like two people can't stand each other but they keep getting together again, having sex again. The video, the woman and the man in the back of Greg and Inara, were dancing crazily then they went back to normal and walked their own ways. Seems to be symbolism for a relationship, where its only sex then nothing more. They keep crossing paths, hitting the sack then leave. |

The lyrics is missing some parts: "its love that leaves and breaks THE SEAL of always thinking you would be real happy and healthy strong and calm.." |

Here is part of an actual explanation for the song, from an article, interviewing Martha and Gary on the set of the music video for this song. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2006/11/25/bmsnowpatrol.xml |

| Snow Patrol – Ways and Means Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"Getting too busy to make amends I should try to make it right" - the couple is getting too busy to mend their relationship. Hes too busy but he knows he should care about saving their relationship. "Are you ready for the shit to hit I think you say you are but aren't Doctor make it better instantly You're the only one who can" -Hes angry and frustrated that they cant work it out. "I've waited here my whole damn life And I've forgotten what I wanted" - he's been holding onto the relationship, trying to wait for it to work but it was a waste of his life. "Maybe I can do it If I put my back into it I can leave you if I wanted But there's nowhere else that I can go" - He wants to leave her now since hes so frustrated but he has no where to go and he feels like nothing without her. He needs her yet he can't stand her. "Maybe I won't suffer If I find a way to love here I'd be lying to myself But there is no way out that I can see" - He tries to love and not have any suffering from it. He knows he would be lying to himself if he keeps staying in a relationship he cannot work out or feel like hes in love. "If I lied you'd know it instantly So I just had to look away" - If he promises to her it can work out, or he promises to change or he says "i love you" its obvious to her he doesn't mean it. "...I never knew the taste of blood till now It's clear I never should have known Breathing fire was never this much fun So there's a dark side in us all" - Hes in a fight with her, he probably got slapped or punched so he "tasted blood in his mouth" 1. Its now clear to him that he should of exit the relationship a looong time ago and not even try wasting time to make it work. And the "breathing fire was never this much fun" is meant as sarcasm. |

Another addition (god wow I have so many grammar mistakes in my previous comment, sorry people) Chocolate could also mean the affair was sweet and addicting; it was a sweet guilty pleasure. |

Since this was chosen to be part of the soundtrack for Zach Braffs new movie "The Last Kiss" I think I might understand a little bit of what the lyrics might mean from connections to the movie plot. In the movie Zach's character is afriad of commitment and unsure of where the commitment is going with his long term girlfriend who is pregnant. At a wedding he meets a young college girl whom he falls for. I'm thinking this is an apology to his lover whom he had secret feelings for and an affair with. "This could be the very minute I'm aware i'm alive All these places feel like home" -This could mean how much she has given him this eye-opening and free feeling he never had with his girlfriend. "This is the straw, final straw in the Roof of my mouth as I lie to you" -she doesn't know he is taken and has a girlfriend. "Just because i'm sorry doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it at the time." -just because he regrets the affair doesn't mean he didn't enjoy every minute of it with her. "You're the only thing that I love Scares me more every day" - he loves her more than his girlfriend and is frightening and he doesn't know what to do since he knows he should be with his girlfriend "On my knees I think clearer Goodness knows I saw it coming Or at least I'll claim I did" -he knew it was wrong but he went on with it anyways. "What have I done? It's too late for that" -This could mean he already fell hard in love with her and can't stop the affair OR he the truth came out his lover found out he lied he was single, and his girlfriend found out he was cheating on her. "What have I become? Truth is nothing yet A simple mistake starts the hardest time" -Maybe he has lost his lover, now he lost his girlfriend too since she found out he was cheating. "I promise I'll do anything you ask, this time." His last plea for forgivness. "Chocolate", maybe his affair with his lover is so addicting. "This is the straw, final straw in the Roof of my mouth as I lie to you" - he had tried before to stop lying and leave her, making up a lie as to why he can't see her, promising to himself this is the "final straw [of chocolate]" but he can't stop himself, he comes back to her still. |
