Well, being that I am one who has done his share of pot-smoking, I can tell you that this song is most definitley about haze. When you smoke haze, white lights all look blue, or have blue outlines, hence the name Practice in Blue. Also, the part about running races in his head, and how the smoke's thick, that's all weed-related. "I walked outside my door to find what I'm looking for, a line, a phrase, a single word..." Marijuana can make song-writing a whole lot easier. When you are high, lyrics and tunes just pop up and make perfect sense. I think this whole song is just basically about how getting high takes your mind off of everyday problems, and helps you with what you do best. as for me, I have a blunt to smoke.
