What a great song. I'm glad I get to be the first to comment and would like to mention these lyrics: "I took my lousy shot at public recognition Could never pull the trigger if I wasn't shaking" It brings up an interesting point about musicians who suffer(ed) from drug or alcohol abuse. I'm not saying it's right, but I think many would agree that some of a musicians best writing comes out when that person has drug/alcohol issues. These lyrics make the case that he might never have taken a shot if he wasn't on something at the time. He's saying he may never have "pulled the trigger" at his "shot at public recognition" if he "wasn't shaking" - on drugs/alcohol. It's just interesting because while many Alkaline Trio songs have a hint of bitterness towards a past of drug abuse, they are acknowledging here that it is a part of how they got started in the first place. Could be waaaay off, but that's how I look at it. |

"well i love you so much, but do me a favor baby don't reply, because i can dish it out, but i can't take it" -This could be God speaking The "i love you so much part." is god speaking to katie. He loves her like he supposedly loves all humanity. The "do me a favor dont reply" is him probably addressing katie, cuz he is ashamed of what he let happen. Afraid of what she has to say. He loves us all so much but is ashamed of what he lets happen on earth. i.e. drunk driving. See, god "can dish it out".. make some mom go through the the worst night of her life... "but i cant take it" he, god, will never have to experience something like that on that same level himself. This could also goes with the "never have to be down to earth. never have to live together on this peice of dirt. never have to find my baby in the crowd" God will never have to do those things. finally he should "be lauging right now" because he doesnt have to go through all that. he lets it happen, he doesnt have to experience it. He is never on the recieving end. this idea is anti-god yes, but jesse doesnt seem to fond of him right now. i.e. the milestone line "i used to pray a god was listening." Could be completely wrong, I might be looking way to into it. but I think it makes sense. |
