Yes! With Bernard's and many other sponsors' support, YoungCare (http://www.youngcare.com.au) a charity foundation, was established to create public awareness of the disturbing problem of the high number of young Australians being placed in nursing homes. Currently there are nearly 7000 young people in aged nursing homes across Australia, some of those are as young ten. YoungCare will provide "a dignified and relevant lifestyle for young people with high care needs". Its first project (hopefully of many) is the building of the Youngcare Apartments. Work on the Apartments began in Novemeber, in Brisbane's south-west surburb of Sinnamon Park. These apartments will provide a home and appropriate care for eighteen young people, who would have otherwise been placed in the inadequate and unfair care of aged nursing homes. This charity foundation was inspired by the battle faced by Bernard's close friends Shevaune and David Conry. Shevaune suffers from multiple sclerosis and can no longer be cared for at home. Frustrated by the lack of an appropriate alternative, David has been the driving force behind Young Care, a non-profit foundation, dedicated to improving the quality of residential care for young people (Source: ABC).
