The Beautiful South – From Under The Covers Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about somebody who stays in bed every morning, not so much because of laziness, but in order to cheat the capitalist system.
Listen to an even better song Heaton wrote on this theme: 'We're Not Deep' by the Housemartins.

Joy Division – From Safety To Where Lyrics 19 years ago
My favourite Joy Division song bar none, it's over 25 years old and yet I've never heard anything so futuristic.

Obviously Ian Curtis was not a Marxist (quite the opposite) but I agree this does seem to be about different 'phases' of the development of society:

"Just passing through till we reach the next stage
But just to where - well it's all been arranged"

As in 'Ceremony' he refers to the "wheels turning" - I think Curtis was acutely aware of the grand themes of history and of his own place within them, which is probably what makes Joy Division songs so epic.

The Beautiful South – Hold On To What? Lyrics 19 years ago
Nobody commented on this yet? In my view the finest BS song of all. I think Heaton is pointing out the injustice of ordinary people working hard all their lives under capitalism, to be rewarded with nothing.

When I hear it I think of all the people who have voted Labour throughout their lives, Holding On to the dream that eventually things are going to improve for everyone, and then Gordon Brown comes along and raises the retirement age to 150 and steals everyone's pension.

Also a dig at prostitution and the British army, and the line about Chamberlain and Jesus is too brilliant for words!

The Smiths – Hand in Glove Lyrics 19 years ago
I might have lost the plot completely but I have listened to this song hundreds of times and I've always thought it epitomised the common Morrissey theme of loneliness.

My interpretation is that Morrissey (being so introverted and vain) is not in love with another person, he is in love with HIMSELF, and therefore he addresses the song to his own hand, his only friend in the world, maybe even as a clever wanking joke.

It is clearly set in the time before he was famous, when he was on the dole but still thought he was destined for greatness ("we may be hidden by rags, but we've something they'll never have"), and the clue is at the climax to the song...

"The good life is out there somewhere
Just stay on my arm you little charmer..."

I just can't believe nobody has considered Hand in Glove in this way!
