Kaki King – Second Brain Lyrics 16 years ago
I llike musicaliada's interpretation, don't know if I agree with it...

The song makes me think of the validity of that final statement. By itself, yes, piano is the most versatile instrument; you've got 7 octaves on a keyboard. But in the context of others playing in several instruments, even if it only has ~40 notes, I think guitar the superior instrument. The advent of pedals gave so many different sounds and moods that I still don't think have been by touched by keyboard.

In the end though, Johnny death is right; it all depends on the players devtion and imagination....

Grateful Dead – Days Between Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the criticism of Jerrys voice, but I don't see it as a bad thing. Hearing the shot voice makes more for the character of the song I think. It has to be an old man singing this. An instance where Robert made words to the voice he knew was to sing it....

Grateful Dead – Brown-Eyed Woman Lyrics 18 years ago
Definitely side with nanukrbsit, but I'm a little biased (I have a dancing bear tattoo).

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I think there are 3 main characters; father, mother and child. I think that the song is about inheriting his fathers fate. Father drinks a lot, has some kids but isn't "there" for them(father is never mentioned in the same verse as his children), mom dies and the kids grow up with a father who couldn't be a positive role model ("never was the same again"). He teaches his kids to "fire the stills," simultaneously teaching them how to make his drug of choice (which they drink) while at the same time warping their respect for law. The last verse is the same as the first, making me think the kid will retrace his fathers steps..... I know that many other Dead songs also have a theme of cycles, things move in circles.....

..... but I could be wrong. Personal interpretation, right?

When I look at their songs, I find more of myself in the lyrics than the authors original intent.

Grateful Dead – Day Job Lyrics 18 years ago
This song was brought out of play because the fans didn't like it.... for real, they requested it not be played anymore....

Good song, the message is pretty clear. It's helped me at times to just laugh when I wanted to quit.

Very sexy song, written by Weir. He mostly played the more suggestive songs, and he was good with it.

Grateful Dead – Days Between Lyrics 18 years ago
I found this song not to long after my Grandpa died. It always reminds me of him. There have been so many days, I know looking back on them at the end of his life could play out like this. Theres alot of frightening times, but also, there were moments that "polished like a golden bowl, the finest ever seen."

I also feel that these other lines hit me hard:
" and there were days I know
when all we ever wanted
was to learn and love and grow
Once we grew into our shoes
we told them where to go
Walked halfway around the world
on promise of the glow
Stood upon a mountain top
Walked barefoot in the snow
Gave the best we had to give
How much we'll never know we'll never know"

I feel those lines in my own life, it speaks so innocently, so directly of how small we were, just growing in our shoes, to conquering a mountain.... those are those moments that shine in your mind's eye as your points of pride.....

Grateful Dead – Weather Report (Part 2)/Let It Grow Lyrics 18 years ago
Robert hunter very much talks in the past in lyric (mining, cowboys, grovenor square, soldiers and sailors). This use of past time makes it easy for me to see the timelessness of the messages. "The Plowman" makes me think of the toil of work I've done, the beads of sweat on my brow in this florida weather. I can be hating it, but I see the value of the work when I think of these lyrics, it let's me know its normal. "The Woodcutters Daughter" is a beautiful classic portrait of a woman, who is concerned with her family (I would guess the water was for some familial purpose). "We make what we made since the world began." All this stuff is timeless, it'll happen again and again.

good call on I Punch's part... I see the perfection aspect..... he seems to be saying shes magical, shes awesome, but she'll be the death of you as well.... took a trip to the beach, the beauty of everything, and the beautiful feeling..... perhaps a theme of getting to caught up in the beauty....

4 point stance is used throughout the CD... to me it always makes me think of a cross, a square or a table... most likely a cross since there seems to be easier to figure out songs by them that talk about religion.

I think that MPS is the sad part, the guy thinking to much, and getting down with his position in life.... this song seems to me to be an answer to that song.... an acceptance of ones fate..... great song....

Bear vs. Shark – MPS Lyrics 19 years ago
He mentions medication, I think hes saying that they are bad, they are landmine carburetors used to try to fix him.... In this state of depression (I'm of the idea the medication is an anti-depressant), I think hes questioning God's existence.... the roads are muddy water, to rained out to traverse so we take trains, which are churches.... church gives you "poetry and endless hours of conversation" that affect the way you see the world..... he talks about being a businessman on the nights that it rains, he spends to much time traveling on trains maybe....

Bear vs. Shark – Bloodgiver Lyrics 19 years ago
First off, there are the Roman allusions: Ceasar, Seize the day (Carpe diem, old latin term), A Venus (maybe a reference to Venus Demilo). A venus can also be a clam... he says into mucus into muscle blown by sand.... a muscle is a aquatic animal... sand produces a pearl inside a oyster, another kind of similar sea creature, and oysters are known to be aphrodisiacs.....

All in all, I say the song is about the reinvigoration of beauty or life.... I really don't know....
