Doesn't it seem that he got so caught up in everything else that he never got a chance to tell his wife the one thing he wanted to? Maybe the whole song is metaphorical.

I agree with what these guys/girls are saying about Dante's Inferno. The inscription above the gate to Hell says "I am the gate into the city of woe. I am the way to a forsaken people. I am the way into eternal sorrow. Sacred justice moved my architect. I was raised here by divine omnipotence, primordal love and ultimate intellect. Only these elements time canoot wear were made before me, and beyond time I stand. Abandon all hope ye who enter here." The 3 main parts to this are 1. The only elements that time connot wear are Angles, the Empyrean, and the First Matter. Man is not eternal so the gate to Hell was created before man was created. 2. "Beyond time i stand" - God's punishment is eternal. 3. "Abandon all hope ye who enter who enter here" - admonition to the damned who enter through this gate into Hell proper. So bringing it back to AFI, does Davey think that he is eternally damned because of his sins, that's why he has no hope? I think that's what he wants us to ponder.

What are you talking about the "weakness of God"? He was cast out for pride saying that he (Lucifer) was going to place his thrown above God's. Anyway I think this song is about death and becoming one of the children of Lilith. As one of them he sees them (choir) at his funeral singing their elegies to him. Though it made more sense for me to write it "I hear the mourning choir" Since the time of day seems irrelevant as to when they would sing elegies.

Well don't you think that this could be about some sort of seance and the haols refer to a spirit of some kind. Since Davey claims to be wiccan, he could be referring to those that aren't wiccan to be the enamored ones since they still maintain some sort of love. Since he has to love, the love of anyone would be like an enamoring which plays into the "Smile" thing. So from there he gave up trying (suicide... i know another AFI song about suicide, but stay with me). Now that he is a halo (ghost, spirit,etc.) he has become a wraith and his presence can only be made in an echo and he has become happy in that place. It almost seems as though it is Dsvey Havok's version of what suicide and life as a spirit is like. Well that's all I've got, take it or leave it
