I always thought he was singing about a girl that made promises but never lived up to them. Maybe that she would always be faithful, or even that she would fully commit. I thought it might be about how she couldn't commit and be only his...maybe marriage, because of the line "It seems I've spent too long, only thinking about myself Now I want to spend my life, just caring bout somebody else." And he's IN TOO DEEP into the relationship that it can't just be something for him, he wants/needs to be married to her and she just doesn't want that. And maybe he gave her an ultimatum and she said no and left. He can understand that she's leaving, but not like that. I don't know, could be out in left field with that one, but just something that I always saw it as. By the way PHIL COLLINS IS THE MAN! obviously there aren't many people (at least the ones that visit this site) that agree, but he's an amazing songwriter and unbelievably talented. He needs to have 3 million more fans for how beautiful of a person he really is. |
