| The Shins – Sleeping Lessons Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I always thought it was "old gods," not "old guard," but now I'm not sure. But it's definitely "they got nothing left" instead of "we got nothing left," and "enlist every ounce" instead of "we waste every ounce." |

| "if every moment of our lives were cradled softly in the hands of some strange and gentle child" is obviously a reference to earlier in the song when he described picking up snails and letting them go in new places. it may have something to do with god, but i seriously doubt it, and there's no real reason to think so. | |
| The Shins – Girl Inform Me Lyrics | 19 years ago |

By the way, if any of you are confused by what he means by "scrutinize the paint away"-- He's talking about sitting around staring at a single spot on the wall for hours on end and "scrutinizing." Of course, what he's really scrutinizing is not the paint on the wall, but how the girl behaves when he's around her, along with the things she says--hints, gestures, things like that. |

It isn't impossible to understand at all. Every single line has a purpose and makes sense in relation to the whole. What makes Mercer a much better lyricist than so many other modern songwriters is that his lyrics are beautiful and subtle without (for the most part) being totally nonsensical or impenetrably esoteric. The line that sums up the whole song is "This is no umbrella to take into the wind." He isn't confident enough in his own interpretation of the girl's feelings to risk having their relationship be turned inside out and bent out of shape. We've all been through this, I think--falling for a female friend and being afraid of screwing up what you already have with her by confessing that you want more. This song is about the "anxiety" and "nervousness" caused by his doubt that his feelings are returned. He wants her to tell him what she really wants--to "inform" him--because he's tired of endlessly wondering about it and "scrutinizing the paint away." |

| The Spinto Band – Oh Mandy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
he's in love with this girl mandy, and she won't pay him any attention--or, well, any of the RIGHT KIND of attention. he's obviously in the so-called "friend zone"--"i tried to chase things i couldn't get," "can read me, and has me," "you're eatin' brains out the back of my head"--so he drowns himself. references to reruns on the WB most likely have to do with the fact that shows on the WB are generally full of mushy, unlikely high school romance. i seriously doubt this song has anything at all to do with mandy moore. don't know about the gnome thing. maybe doesn't serve any real purpose. |

| Oh yeah, and "And I don't wish" should be "Oh and I wish." | |

Some possible corrections: Let me read [the statements] for which I am thankful My father my mother my family essential The fact that there’s water on top of this planet The opportunity for me to walk in it [Since it's the new year, thanks a lot for] ??? And the ability to [take it if I want to] [Finally I give thanks to] my closest acquaintance That kid has so many new things They know who this one is And I wish that they do So I could stay With them Did I tell you I don’t think this will work out That I love you but I’m wanting something else Something close to me that I cannot forgive Something far away that I’d like to admit I’d like to end it with [the] music cliché Say in a phone call that it's not you it's me Then I could hang up and just put you away In some music box [with the sweet sound it plays] Since it’s a holiday I’ll leave you alone Dial [six] numbers and then hang up the phone A good excuse for me to ??? Because you [can't be hurt by what you don't know] And I don’t wish That you could be So that it would stop Me from asking But lend me your ear dear Did I tell you I don’t think this will work out That I love you but I’m wanting something else Something close to me that I cannot forgive Something far away that I’d like to [admit] [Admit] [ ] [ ] Let me tell you that you [don't need to worry now] Did I tell you I don’t think this will work out That I love you but I’m wanting something else Something close to me that I cannot forgive Something far away that I’d like to [admit] [Admit] [Admit] |

| how the hell is sonic youth underrated? they're a great band, don't get me wrong, but they also get plenty of recognition for it. | |
