| My psychology professor said that the best indicator/predictor of anyone's future actions is to observe what they're doing right now. It is a silly idea, but when I think about a certain habit of mine that I have since childhood, noticing just how much that I really control how I want my life to turn out, I get terribly afraid of my future. When I hear this song, I think about this exact terrible feeling, that "everyday is exactly the same". When I look back at how long I played a certain habit, good or bad, like an addiction or a silly/uncontrollable personality trait,I rather agree I can see my future, for if I can't get it of now, it might as well linger in me for a long time, like an organ keeping me alive, lol. xD | |

I find different individual's interpretations of song lyrics amusing. Either you'll try to reach an exact meaning of a song (where the best source is the artist), or you'll "make up" or agree to an interpretation that somehow fits your thought processes. (blah for my writing). But like poetry, the writer/listener adds the final touch to the artwork's completion. Songs in a typical NIN album follow like a story. This song came after "Mr Self Destruct", so I presumed this song continued with the self-abusive side of the character in the downward spiral. He's calling "pig" at the worthless, poor, perhaps anxious/dumb side of himself. But I believe the narrator does not deem his "desirable" self as a pig, even though he is the real one "sitting in the mud". Actually, what surprisedly and sadly comes to my head is a character who masturbates himself again and again during an anxiety attack, thus he is in a moment of "what I am suppose to do" and he doesn't care about a chance of the situation to improve. And when he says that the one called pig "needed something new", I think the character is aware of the pig's trouble--his real troubles--and needs to do something better/new to help them both. It is akin to dissociation. I believe "pig" here carries its common connotations such as filth and worthless shit (no offense to pigs, I'm sorry). Then again, when would you call yourself a pig (in a violent, pathetic, dazed manner)? |

| this song reminds me of beauty and the beast. Just the word "curse" can suggest other meanings that listeners overlook. the mixing of soft and harsh vocals is pretty interesting, too, and it reminds me more of beauty and the beast. I don't know, I'll love to say more about this song, but I wouldn't say it's "obvious". Keeping things simple is better actually; you can pick so many possibilities of meanings than in a song that is so complex and confusing. seriously. :D | |

So...this song has over 50 comments, but I'm still going to post my idea about the song's meaning. This song speaks about suicide through the eyes of the person who constantly thinks about his/her sad situation, and wants to end his/her life. When I hear or read about suicide, its a serious situation, or an emergency to get to help. The whole line "nobody cares to talk about it" is what commonly most suicidal people think; they think nobody cares to listen to them, or they think to talk about their problems is pathetic and useless--only a burden to those they care (to talk to). As for the "speaker" of the song, it is the person who wants to kill herself. Its like her conscience sees that the love she felt has "died" too many times, and its just getting old and stupid. she wants to be loved, but at the some time there is some hopelessness that really no one cares. Yet the "love" deserves to be alive cuz it makes her happy, and she too deserves to be alive. I can't define what kind of love she's talking about, but it seems that she's not receiving the right love to convince herself to stop thinking about suicide. Like in the first stanza, there's a feeling from the speaker that she doesn't want to kill herself--Cause I won't stop holding on... She doesn't want to think about killing herself (it might bug her), but her problems ARE real and its really wounding her emotionally and powerfully. Its my opinion, and I could be wrong and stupid :) final note, scars could associate self injury, or "wounds" that won't heal but they don't have to be physical. |

| Well...What do you think the title of this song means? Its water, yeah. But he uses the water in this song like some kind of bad thing. You suffocate in water. It can take away your breathing, your concentration, and sometimes your warmth/comfort. | Doesn't the phrase "writing on the wall" mean a sort of misfortune to happen? Like a omen or a sign that indicates something bad will occur. If I am right, or I am close, I feel that meaning fits the idea of the song. I don't think the song is necessarily about a "judgemental" relationship (yet it could be a part). The beginning feels tense, perhaps some kind of a realtionship between two people who feel they have something wrong or imperfect. The signal of misfortune is within the status/health of the relationship, or what surrounds the couple's minds. Thus, that is when the certain misfortune strikes, and that appears to be the bond broken in the relationship. When the song starts with "I hope to God" that is where the hope for the disaster or wrong to end. I am trying to find a significance from the video into the lyrics. Of course, not all songs fit perfectly to their video. But the title really interests me. | |

| Its pretty obvious, well, by my perspective. Fairy tales tell wonderful stories, but they're simply lies. They are usually about beautiful people who from a somewhat tragic beginning fall into a magical trap of paradise being either marrying a "prince" of one's dream, or something like that... But I think the lesson in this song is to ignore trying to mimic or copy a life or story that interests you and just try to make it your own way, or "be yourself"? I know I had something good to say, but that's how I see it. Perhaps you see yourself as a person in a favorite fantasy, but accept the fact you aren't that person. You got something more creative/interesting to explore. "Kill the lights", in my opinion, is like being a actor on stage and you just intentionally broke the lights at top of you, resulting the theater to go black, but the show you were trying to pretend is not on anymore...the "stage" is now yours, and you could do whatever you want without really seeing others (being people or characters) to distract you. She's 'something' but she probably doesn't wholly grasp what, probably a victim or a loser. "And Your Head Is In My Closet"...The 'head' or 'mark' of the rapist in her 'closet'. She was raped, and the layer of her once-sealed virginty is gone by his filthy intented action. "Dead Forever, They'll Never Search It"...Only she knows what happened to her. I mean, for others to know she was raped, they got to look into her crouch to find out if she was indeed raped. But she feels 'dead', or that the exact thing the rapist did to her pretty much is no more, simply a leftover torn scar that nobody will think about searching, unless the girl speaks. =] |

could be based on the relationship btw a child and parent. Perhaps the child is old now and is very distant, or minimally-emotionally-tied to the parent. When I read the lyrics I saw a person who remembers something good about this parent, but realizes he/she was really no good. That's how I saw it, but is not neccessarily how I would interpret it =P |

Lovely song... It seems the person has tried to escape something, but somehow she cannot and its difficult for her to forget about it. Perhaps this something is a person she once loved and saw was not acceptable to her life. This something could also be her hometown, family, or herself. Somehow its hard for her to let go of the past, she might or want to try. I also noted the song from the perspective of a person who does not feel welcome in where she is or was, and she has decided to run away from that place, trying to forget about it all and reach to live a newer life all on her own, But can she? It seems she is unsure, but so far she's doing it, but she still misses the times shes leaving. |

I thought this song related to self-injury. Part about the robots hiding their emotions, girls vomitting, and boys wetting their beds, the song is kind of emotional and ties to hiding something or realizing nothing gets better but worst. |
