Dave Matthews Band – Recently Lyrics 18 years ago
The Folsom Field version and the live at... (warehouse) version intro's start simmilarly:

Some people like to drink
Some people don't
FF: Some people like to get drunk as hell at someone
L@: Some people like to smoke a fat one, someone
Some people do it
Some people don't that's okay that's just the way it's supposed to be hey
Some people do, some people don't
Some people will and others, they won't
Some people do, some people don't (repeat)

I don't know what these have to do with the rest of the song, but I think it's cool how Dave acknowledges that there are people in the world (maybe even his big fans (me for one)) don't drink or smoke pot, but that it's a good thing that everyone doesn't do it.

Great song, I think that there can be many circumstances where some people look down on other's relationships for various resons (interracial, interclass, etc), but if love is true and legitmate then we shouldn't care about what others think. Let them stare, and we'll just ignore.

I would just like to say that I think that addiction9 is a peckerhead for going out of his way to try to insult people for liking a group that he doesn't like. He must have no friends to have that much free time on his hands.

Anyways *ahem* I think that it's refreshing to find a song about death that isn't a heavy metal, slasher death song. He doesn't glorify death or make it seam like it's a dark evil thing; a sad thing yes, but not evil. I'm suprised that more musicians don't take a stab at that idea.

Have you ever been in one of those relationships where nothing huge was wrong, but the relationship just had to end. maybe just because one member was moving away, or on to something better. This song just nails that situation on the head (for me at least).

Dave Matthews Band – JTR Lyrics 19 years ago
A little info about John The Revelator. John was perhaps Jesus' closest appostle having been given the title John the Beloved by Christ before he was given the title John the Revelator. He wrote several books in the New Testament including the Gospel of John and Revelation. I think this song is tied in stongly with the book of Revelation. The book primarily focus on the final conflict between Good and Evil hence the line
I see it now
I believe the devil and the lord have been dancing all along.

The book of revelation can be one of the most inspiring and uplifting books of scripture if it can be properly understood. I think thats why Dave chose to throw in some of the lines that he did.

And if my opinion is worth a crap, I like the fulsom field live lyrics the best.

Collective Soul – Shine Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is awesome. I haven't heard it in a while, but a radio station in my hometown played it and I decided I wanted to pick it up from itunes, and I have been listening to it ever since.
I might be making a controversial statement here, and I know that Collective Soul usually puts a touch of Christianity here and there in most of their songs, but maybe this song isn't about christianity in specific, but maybe about good uplifting wholesome beliefs that help us be motivated to do good in the world. Notice how the entire song doesn't have a single mention of God, Christ or angles or any sort. And after having associated with many people of different faiths from around the world I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of faiths have some sort of belief in some version of heaven.
I listen to this song and I hear a man crying to the heavens asking the god/s or whatever is out there to direct him and help him know what's out there.
I could be way off on the whole non-denominational thing, but that's just what I'm getting. Take it as you will.
(I am a firm believing Christian btw so I'm not trying to detract from other's belief in Christ.)

Maroon 5 – Harder To Breathe Lyrics 19 years ago
Also I've seen in a number of abusive relationships how the guy will say things like I hate you, I never want to see you again (You drain me dry and make me wonder why I’m even here This Double Vision I was seeing is finally clear You want to stay but you know very well I want you gone Not fit to funkin’ tread the ground I’m walking on)
Then they will say things like I love you I can't live without you (You’ll understand what I mean when I say There’s no way we’re gonna give up)

Dave Matthews Band – The Dreaming Tree Lyrics 19 years ago
Whether this is what dave is getting at or not this is what this song means to me:
The human spirit has a great capability to be resiliant. We can take getting fired from our job, having our house burn down, totalling our car, so on and so forth. But when it comes down to losing something related to our fondest memories (spouse, loved one, parent) that can really shake us to the core. I think this song is about totally being broken down where even after all our worldy possesions and pleasures are gone there's still something else that can be taken away, something more important, our dreaming tree. And once that's gone, well... I guess life is never the same.

Ok... Having read through some of these "song interpretations" if thats what you call saying "OMG I love maroon 5 they're so great, blah blah blah...." I thought that maybe I'd do what we're supposed to do here and say what I think the song is about.

Perhaps a man and a woman get into a relationship and she finds out only too late that he's a sex offender or abusive or something (I have the tendancy of getting very physical so watch your step cause if I do you'll need a miracle). So she stands up to him and tells him what he's doing is wrong and the lyrics to the song are him exploding to what she says.

He immidiately challenges what she says (How dare you say that my behavior is unacceptable so condescending unnecessarily critical)

He makes her feel like no one will have her besides him (When it gets cold outside and you got nobody to love)

He taunts her and shows his power over her(Does it kill does it burn is it painful to learn that it’s me that has all the control?

And then to top it off he uses scare tactics to make her afraid of him (And like a little girl cries in the Face of a monster that lives in her dreams. Is there anyone out there cause it’s getting harder and harder to breathe?)

I personally don't see anything that indicates that the girl in the relationship has done anything wrong. Perhaps I'm overlooking anything, but I think this song is just about a sicko flipping out on his girlfriend. It was the song that Law and Order: SVU used in it's ad's was it not?

If you are thinking that this song is about a bj then all that you are hearing is the words: "Turn your head, now baby just spit me out." and no other part of the song.

There are times where people just give up on putting up with relationships that are destructive. I see the song as a guy saying (maybe even sarcastically) let's stop tiptoeing around the fact that we don't get along and lets burn our bridges now.

Dave Matthews Band – Dreams of Our Fathers Lyrics 19 years ago
After having re-read most of the comments on this page I felt like I wanted to add one more thing. A lot of people don't like this song because they feel like it doesn't fit the old DMB genre, but the fact of the matter is it fits quite nicely. Dave style has always been to not quite settle into one genre. He'll take a little rock, a little jazz, a little blues (so and and so forth) and then throw it into one mix. Thats what makes him so amazing. This song all he's done is just taken a funk feel and thrown it into the mix to make it sound different. Take for example other songs he does simmilar things with: Grace is gone (country), Grey Blue Eyes, (African Chant) Haloween (Metal), Ants Marching (Irish Fiddle), Pantala Naga Pampa (Latin). The list goes on and on.

I know everything to be said about this song has already been said. I just wanna put in my 2 cents about the line "How could this rythm ever quit, bags packed on a plane, hopefully to heaven". Isn't that a very poetic way of talking about a sudden and unexpected death? I think so.

Dave Matthews Band – Where Are You Going (Busted Stuff version) Lyrics 19 years ago
The way I see it, this song takes a different perspective on the boy/girl relationship. Too quickly artists will jump on the bandwagon and make a really mushy love song that involves a lot of kissing, and sex, and other misc. romance exclusively. This song however is about a guy who is willing to let the girl do what she needs to before she can settle down, but he's letting her know that whatever the case may be, I'll always be here for you. Romance is a big part of love, but there are other aspects of it that are involved and I think this song touches on those very well.

Dave Matthews Band – Some Devil Lyrics 19 years ago
The one line that everyone keeps mentioning "always and forever" is really what makes this song stand out above most other songs of this type. Few musicians will throw those words out, because the love their talking about is shallow. The love that Dave is bringing out is deep and fixed, that makes the song more stirring and passionate.

I love this song. It has a nice funk drive to it that just makes you wanna listen to it over and over again.

I'm sure that there's a lot more to read into this song than what I'm just mentioning here, but what I'm seeing is that there's a person who is going through a stage in his/her life where he/she doesn't want to be tied up by what his/her "fathers" want. He/she has all of these questions about life and how to do things, but isn't ever sureand so as life goes on perhaps he/she realizes that what his/her "fathers" wanted might not have ended up beings so bad in the first place. "This love I posses, love, it must be the dreams of our fathers."

Dave Matthews Band – Digging a Ditch Lyrics 19 years ago
What I feel that dave is getting at here is that we all have our little thing that we do that gets us away from reality for a while. Whether that be drugs, or TV (so on and so forth) it comes at a price. While we all need to get away from reality for a while, we end up putting off the rest of the world.
