This is a great pild so ff what I think is their second best album (after Animals). I believe the first and second verses explain when the first creatures came on land and they had no help and that it was a great achievement for life on Earth. The third verse has to do again with the theory that we all came from the same maternal source (the primordiel soup, don't remember how to spell it) and the author realizes that everyone comes from the same source and feels connected. Now it switches to a different theme where life on Earth is no longer motivated (verse 4, lines 1-3) as it was when it made the huge leap onto land billions (millions?) of years ago. The fourth line of that verse about flying around the sun means that we have not made many significant goals as humans. It is sort of when someone compares the Pyramids of Giza to what we can do now in terms of technology and imaginations. Assuming that the last 15 minutes were a revelation of what I just stated, he feels motivated to do something significant. And also notice how he refers back to no one helping again which echoes(!) what the first amphibians did and what he plans to do. P.S. I'm sorry if you have already read something just lie this since I am sure I'm not the only one to think of this meaning but it would still be greatly appreciated if I got feedback. |

This is one of my personal favorite Band songs and its a shame Richard Manuel had to die. If you haven't heard this it is very beautiful and calming. My interpretation of this song is that the author is in a depressed state of mind and oddly enough, could be classified as a blues song if you stretch enough. Its a trite 'ol girl left me song but more emphasis on the after-effects. Great duet by Levon and Richard by the way. |
