| Kevin Devine – Murphy's Song Lyrics

i think this song is great; i'm sure the majority of you have read his explanation of it from the daytrotter session...
"Around that same time, my friend, drummer, and sometimes producer Mike Skinner mentioned that he felt I could be too precious with my songs sometimes, that I let a lot of good stuff fall by the wayside because I feel this need to fine-tooth comb everything and if I feel like that’s not bearing results quickly enough, I get impatient and feel overmatched and kind of move on. I also have a tendency to shy away from writing stuff sometimes if I feel like it might sound ridiculous coming from me stylistically, and he was kinda gently chiding me about that too, to open it up a bit. He was encouraging me in the sense that it’s kind of remarkable how much I get done in spite of those instincts. So, I was walking around in my neighborhood one day in July and the start of this popped in my head, this weird sea story about this kind of half-assed loner rolling around on the sea with his dog, this mangy, affectionate stray he used as a stand in for all his failed connections in the world, and what would happen when the dog died. This drifter appealed to me – the first lyric I sang was, “I was an archer/but I couldn’t shoot straight/I broke all of Ma’s windows/Poked holes through her drapes.” That came in a shot and it gave me a pretty immediate and involved character sketch; I went home and wrote it in 20 minutes. That melody and Hawaiian sort of shuffle reminded me a little bit of certain Kinks things, or of Belle & Sebastian; I overrode my instinct to throttle it and decided to embrace it. My friend Jaymay says it reminds her of Chet Baker. I dunno." |

it's strange that more than half the songs he plays are so painful to watch live, and then he's so kind and personable to speak with afterwards, no? |

i believe that this and seed are two of my favorite songs on santi. the new album took some warming up to, but really love it. i think it's a new sound, but the album is just so great. it's so honest and it sounds like they all really put everything they had into it. |

happy birthday elliott.
but these lyrics are partially incorrect.
here's how they should go:
"here's the foreign sun on holiday
meeting her eyes about halfway
a look you know it's killed many men
and i've been all of them, inside a week
see the man on the bar who got too drunk to speak.
he adores that song mundane as it is
days in a dream that wasn't his
night's about the top of the lift
where continents drift too far away
to keep it together for long, on this half holiday
from the bar they walk to place pigalle
the taxi waved down
goodnight, sleep well
now it's just a step to the door
and he wants all the more to bring her away
out of this temporary half holiday" |

This is in a competition with No Name #2 to be my favorite No Name. It's got this melancholy to it, and I love Elliott's voice on all of Roman Candle.
And the piano tribute album? Amazing. |

I know a lot of people don't like how rough this song is for more than the first half, but I think it's really cool. Especially how the girl (Jenny Lewis, if it is indeed Blake and Jenny from Rilo Kiley talking at the beginning) starts singing along at some parts.
I think this song is definitely about opposistion towards the Christian religion, especially with the lowly sounding girl singing Amazing Grace at the very end. |

I also get the feeling that he may be referring to himself as Miss Delaney's boyfriend, because on a live version of this song he switches it up to say, "I'm not up in heaven, so don't treat me like I'm dead." I got that feeling before I heard that, but that made it seem more evident. |

The A'capelle version of this is fucking incredible, although the background vocals seem a bit too computerized for my liking. Its so much sadder, whereas this is an upbeat song. |

To me, this song is about the family living in the Annex. Or families, rather - the Van Daans and the Franks.
I feel like this is written from Anne Frank's point of view, mostly about Peter Van Daan, who was the 16 year old son of the Van Daans and Anne was trying to learn to like him or love him, since she figured he was the only boy she would see for however many months, although it ended up being her life. Mrs. Van Daan was always trying to force Peter and Anne into a relationship, talking early on about how they should be married and once they left the Annex the Van Daans and the Franks would probably be related.
"And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder
And your dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for"
This makes me think about how the Van Daan parents constantly quarreled, and Mrs. Van Daan was always bossing Mr. Van Daan around and nagging him about his temper. The part about throwing the garbage reminds me of how Mr. Van Daan had a horrible temper, which was only made worse by the fact that he was addicted to smoking. The part about learning about eachothers bodies was either literal, or symbolic for Anne and Peter's blossoming relationship.
"And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go"
This makes me think that there was a point when Anne realized she could, well, love Peter. She was the only person in the Annex who bothered to get to know Peter at all, hence the part about sinking into his soul. No one else in the Annex really cared about what Peter thought or what he had to say, especially not his parents. His personality was stripped away by constantly being put down by his parents.
It's just my opinion. |

The way this song is put together is incredible. Generally, Conor's songs are much more simple. I think this may be my favorite song as of late. Fevers and Mirrors is arguably the best album put out by Bright Eyes.
"Girls found honey to drench our hands
Men cut marble to mark our graves"
That's my favorite. |
