The Shins – Red Rabbits Lyrics 17 years ago
I initially thought political, next thought a relationship, considered drugs and then returned to political, and now I have realized that I have leaned in every direction possible as to what this song means, and I realized that I am not sure yet, so I just need to think about it more. But one thing is sure the way Mercer put's words together is BEAUTIFUL and just way to fun. Everytime I listen to the words and the music I just smile, because it's so fucking good. The beauty of his songs, is not in the meaning, it's in the sound of the songs themselves. I guess that is what I care about more then the meaning anyway.

The Shins – Girl On The Wing Lyrics 17 years ago
I've loved the Shins for a loooooooong time and today I just realized how incredible this song is, for like the 9th time. I love this band. Mercer's word use is unlike anyone. His words, themselves are catchy- they role right off the tongue. I love it!

Regina Spektor – That Time Lyrics 17 years ago
Someone else said it, but it needs to be said again. "Hey remember that time when I would only smoke Marlboros." I could listen to this line over and over again... It makes the song! Maraharaharborosah!

Sufjan Stevens – Opie's Funeral Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This song!!!!!! I am so happy that I have heard it. It's phenomenally (I don't think thats a word) beautiful and tragic. Tragically beautiful. I almost feel sort of bad about how much I enjoy this sad song every time I hear it. But it's a different kind of enjoy. It's really just a realization that this song is so pure and truthful - quite possibly just a sample of something more real than we can understand.

The Shins – Young Pilgrims Lyrics 17 years ago
I grew up in a super conservative Christian Reformed community, which was actually a town of like 1000 people... tragic huh? Actually not to bad, but I have claimed this song as my anthem, so I would just like to say thank you Mercer for writing my anthem! Anyways, I know everyone wants to read this huge religious debate into the song, but for me I see it as being about optimism. My life even today has revolved around this staunch little CRC community, which often just gets almost too much to handle, if you actually stop and think about it. Many people don't, they just except the truths of the Christianity and live completely content, and there is nothing wrong with that, but I have had to create my own contenment, cuz unfortunately I have thought forward and backwards about Christianity and whether or not I want it, understand it, believe it, and it has driven me nearly crazy and just want to scream at everyone in my church who has just accepted Christianity without questioning other beliefs like other religions, or the possiblity of no God, but I always knew better. I had to just get over that, and be content with the fact that I know there is more and that I want to stir things up a bit, but hell.... I'll just leave them alone, and be optimistic that maybe someday these people will question and discover that once they are through their beliefs have changed or their faith has grown more than if they had studied the Heidelberg Catechism for 3 years.

Sigur Rós – Starálfur Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. It's so incredibly beautiful- I completely agree with you AQShet - well said. I heard lots of people say they want to know what the lyrics actually are to put the song together, but I don't need them. In fact I think it is easier to get to the heart and soul of the music if I can't understand the lyrics. I still can listen to the way the artist sings the song, but more importantly I don't get caught up in the words only. The music speaks so much itself, anymore speaking and it would be like watching the veiw with 6 different women all talking at the same time. I can't handle it. It's perfect just the way it is. Everytime I listen to it, I feel like I am experiencing the whole adventure of a lifetime packed into just under 7 minutes. It's amazing how much emotion is in that short of time, but I really feel as if I have experienced the whole journey: birth to death- and it was beautiful.

Sufjan Stevens – Chicago Lyrics 17 years ago
The first time I heard this song I was driving to Chicago with some friends. At about 4AM we were coming into the outskirts of Chicago just in time for this song- It was PHENOMINAL! I honestly remember this song just almost dancing in my ears it was so beautiful. It blew me away. I distinctly remember thinking that if this song were to get any better we would have to shut it off so I could just stop and take it all in. Everything about it is beautiful. This song is about regret, but about how every moment is a chance to start over and move on, In this case it involved a road trip to Chicago. It is also about God's plan for our lives that is undeniable. We often have our own ideas, but God will take us and reacreate us to fulfill His plan.
