David Bowie – The Man Who Sold the World Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is about someone who has a near death experience, becomes a born-again Christian but doesn’t fit in.
I'll recap the lyrics with what I think he was trying to say and I’ll use Bowie as the person who goes through this experience (though it could be anyone, I guess)
Something happens (either an accident or could be drug-related) and his soul leaves his body, goes up the stairway to Heaven and talks to Jesus about old times (was and when). Jesus mentions that he was Bowie's friend before Bowie was born. This suprises Bowie because he has not been a faithful Christian. Bowie didn’t think they were friends because he thought Jesus’ presence in society died (and Christianity?) along time ago.
Then I think the next paragraph is Jesus' response.
Jesus says no, I didn’t die and I never lost control…and you’re standing in front of the man who gave up the world/gave up life (sold the world) so that everyone would go to Heaven.
Then it goes back to Bowie. I think Bowie laughs b/c he thought that was a cocky statement (or he doesn’t think Jesus is in control). He then shakes Jesus’ hand (signifying that he now believes in Jesus or at least acknowledges his presence) and returns back to earth. When he gets back, everything around him is foreign…even after years (maybe he feels alienated b/c he now believes in Jesus). He looks at everyone and realizes that Jesus’ presence did die a long time ago (or we are as good as dead).
Then I think he responds on behalf of everyone. We’re not aware about Jesus b/c we think we’re in control…but Jesus is right next to us.
That's my opinion
