| Modest Mouse – Tiny Cities Made of Ashes Lyrics

i think people are being too specific. it's about searching for meaning in a seemingly meaningless world, like many of modest mouse' songs. I've always taken tiny cities made of ashes as sodom and gomorrah, destroyed by God because of their evil, but that might not be correct. "Got a phone call from the Lord" is a reference to what little control we really have over our existence... Just a display of how absurd our lives really are. we take our lives so seriously, but for what? |

| Modest Mouse – I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock) Lyrics

This song is about the existential theory of the meaninglessness of life and cyclical processes displayed in it. Noone likes to think about life as a period with a beginning and an end, and it scares many people that they may one day die ("you never die and you never grow old"). Society teaches us the idealistic view of a meaningful and purposeful life from the moment we are born, never mentioning the fact that one day we will actually perish and be no more. Modest Mouse mocks popular culture with irrational and sarcastic statements. Almost all of Modest Mouse's songs are very similar to Albert Camus' existential pieces like The Stranger. |

| Pavement – Silence Kid Lyrics

This song is about Malkmus' decision to create a band and continue with his musical endeavors once he left his parent's home. "Dont take your pawnshop (band) home on the road". He is a wierd, silent kid who is regarded to be nice by others but truly loves the rock scene. He leaves with hope for a rockstar life (let's talk about leavin') and struggles with what his family thinks of his lifestyle (c'mon now, talk about your family) and is told by his parent that his family has not been fortunate, therefore he should choose a stabile career. She doesn't want him to lose his graceful tone, the favor she has for him as a good kid. Malkmus then shifts to the point of view of the silent kid when he is out on the music scene, enjoying himself, but ends up "screwing myself with my hand", implying that the authority figures were right. Overall it is a story of struggles. |

This song is about growing up and the different stages of life, all of the places that we are in at different times, and the loss of innocence in general, hence "wake". If you look at each verse, they're all different stages of Stephan's life...the song ends where he is now, adressing a child about his divorced wife...
Thats what I think. |

Easily one of the best songs ever written, anywhere. Lots of good interpretations on here already...Jenkins writes lyrics that are timeless, everyone can relate to them no matter what your situtation may be. Combining that with excellent musicianship and you get pure genious. After picking up this album a couple years ago after hearing about them from a friend, I've probably listened to them every day since. THE most overlooked band ever. |
