| Something Corporate – Me And The Moon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"to me, even though everyone says that its about the woman killing her husband, i think its about her killing her dad. "17 years and all that he gave was a daughter"" --> Line translates as: 17 years of marriage and the only good thing he (the husband) gave in it was a daughter. So no, not killing her abusive father. ""You marry a role"" -> ie. You marry into becoming a housewife, no more than a role, you have no life after marriage . ""She's praying to Jesus, she's pulling the trigger There's no tears, cause he's not here She washes her hands, and she fixes the dinner"" --> Esp. to those who think this is suicide - how can she fix the dinner if she's just killed herself? She kills him, hoping it's the right thing to do, is probably hit by a wave of relief, can't think of what to do, or knows she'll be taken away so focuses on simply making the dinner. """It's me and the moon," she says I got no trouble with that"" --> Me and my dreams, hopes and regrets left now, and I'm ok with that. "And it's over, but just started HER blood stained the carpet Her heart like a crystal She's lucid and departed A life left behind, she can find in her mind gone away" --> Ah, the much debated one =). (Kamikaze): "This mistyped lyric is pretty much the lynchpin in the suicide argument. It's actually HER blood. Why would she be bleeding otherwise?" Why indeed? Try singing/recording the as a launchpad for the rest of the phrase in a loose american accent yourself, it comes out as similar to "her". "her" would not make sense with the previous lyrics. Hey, if the singer himself has admitted it is about her murdering her husband, who's gonna be right? "her heart like a crystal" --> Her heart clear, she knows what she's doing and is going to do it. She reached the point and state of mind where everything is irrelevant besides her purpose, there is a certain lack of reason to it ("noone's so sure..."), yet at the same time crystal clear to her. "Lucid" = Clear again. "Departed" likewise means her thought is no longer there, she past it and into a clearly set purpose and state of mind. (Kamikaze:) "C'mon, people. Crystal is fragile, and if you mess with it enough, it WILL break. Lucid = Clear. Departed = Gone." --> Why would her heart be like crystal and herself lucid if she's dead? This bit is talking about the state of mind she is in at this time and this fits in with the rest of the song. She is both "there" and of a lucid, crystal purpose and "not there" (departed) in not having an entirely sane mind, but who would if they're driven to what she's doing? Fragile yes, but it is a fragile state of mind she is in, not something that has already broken, but the point she has come to because her life has been so downtrodden. She is fragile, and this drives ehr to this state, and this crystal clear purpose without "thought". She innately "knows" what she is going to do and the consequences of it. If anyone of theatre-ry mind has read/seen Jean Annouilh's Antigone, the character of Antigone reaches a similar state. "A life left behind..." --> Her past "life" with this man is gone. She's gonna get taken away, out of the world and "life" by "them" (paramedics, police, psycologists, etc) She gave up her soul with her marriage; she lost her free independant spirit when she became the role of housewife. Now she's breaking down. Simple. Also, suicide ain't a crime the same way a murder is. "And it's over, but just started" --> Her freedom. She freed herself from her husband by killing him, that's the first step to it and she thought that might be it, and now she's done it, and the freedom has just begn. Her physical freedom didn't last 'cause "they" came to rush her away, most likely to a mental institution, so she retreated in on herself with her dreams; "the moon". So she is truly free in her mind, and free of the husband. Hence people being unsure of the "reason", and the lucidity of her actions becaus eshe is still acting in calm and clear manner, probably more so than she has before. Yet she still has some sort of mental freedom now she doesn't have the husband around, she is "a butterfly", free at last. (Ploink:) "I think the butterfly part isn't just a symbol of freedom but also a symbol of her being vulnerable. "But you wouldn't let me die" could mean her husband wouldn't stop it all so she has to do it herself" Agreed. He wont stop torturing her life by letting her go or ending it, so she must end his to be free of him. See previous paragraph also. (Silver Bullets:) "Death is be the release she's seeking, but she knows they won't let her have it" Agreed. (pickles b mix:) "then i think that "And it's over, but just started" means that her life is over (jail) but its just begining (husbands gone, she can do what she wants now)" To an extent agreed. See above. "Reasons like seasons They constantly change And the seasons of last year Like reasons have floated away" --> Reasons, thoughts, it always changes but inevitbaly leads to little action 'cause they'll keep changing from suggesting to do this to doing that and you'll never make your mind up. Now the reasons have floated away, she's just going to do what she's going to do. She's in a state beyond reason. "Away with this spilt milk Away with this dirty dish water, away" --> Time to clear up this chapter of her life and the mistakes she made and be done with it. She needs to clean her life to get the freedom she needs, and she can only do this by killing the husband, whatever the consequences. She's made the decision to be away with all the mess her life is in, be done with it, and she makes this without any specific reasons, it's all built up and sh's going to do it as a matter of inevitability. "I am a butterfly, I am a butterfly I am a butterfly " Great dying refrain, can just imagine her in the room of jail/institue/whatever telling herself she is at last free, however much of a "freedom" it is. It is better than her past, and she is free of that. At last. This is mainly to counter Kamikaze's post and those others with the suicide approach. Meh. |

| The Killers – This River Is Wild Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I agree with most everyone's comments so far, but I also see a reference to the temptation on the mountian. Long, long, long way down? Man in red saying "I just want to show you want I know"? So strong temptation to go from Sam's town. I don't think the man in red, whilst an obvious reference to the devil. is particularly evil, nor do I reckon the temptation is a "wrong" one. But everyone else's covered what else I would say - That if you're going nowhere, you can either give up, keep trying or move on and experience the world some. | |

| I think Loial was right that Stevens wrote it for his dog, but it can apply to humanity just as easily as his dog. But this song is just purely beautiful. | |

| Also, I really like the way the line I think I'll head home builds up throughout... s'very... flowing. | |

Another great song about the simple things. How a simple home is comfort enough for him: "Bring me a day full of honest work and a roof that never leaks I'll be satisfied" Shows this particularly. "Bring me the news all about the town How it struggles to help all the farmers out During harvest time" - This verse is just genius. How we don't need to worry about all that goes on in the world because it hardly helps us survive and do what we need to do to be satisfied with ourselves. I love Midlake and their outlook on life, so... geniune and true. |

| Midlake – Bandits Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Brilliant. Another of their songs saying how simple things are best and how we should enjoy them and forget about the over-complex and action-filled lives we live sometimes. | |
| Midlake – Roscoe Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is saying how mixed up the modern hectic world can be, remembering how good the simple things are and how we should not let things get too complex, just keep them simple and get away from the unnecessary bustle and race of these days. As Lura04 said, it's a lament for times gone when things were simple. Matt |
