This song isn't a snub at Lloyd Cole, it's a tribute to him. Camera Obscura are Scottish as is Lloyd and Traceyanne Campbell is a fan of his. Lloyd currently lives in Massachusetts and he tried to take his family to see Camera Obscura in concert, but couldn't because his son is underaged. When Camera Obscura heard about the incident, they wrote this song. This was explained before the video that jeisenbe mentioned was played on Subterranean on MTV2. |

Stuart Murdoch is a huge baseball fan, so this song is definitely about baseball. I think this is the most complex Belle & Sebastian lyrically. There is a lot going on and a lot of references that aren't readily apparent. Most have been mentioned in these posts, but let me add one more. "The statue's crying too, but well he may" is not just wordplay on the name Willie Mays, although it is that. There is an actual statue of Willie Mays at the Giants stadium in San Francisco. |

I think this song is where Belle & Sebastian began. This sounds like something they would make, only it was recorded over thirty years ago. Just a great song. |
