Benny Mardones – Into The Night Lyrics 2 years ago
@[MB657310:45650] He's lying. The next line of the song is "Separated by fools who don't know what love is yet..." and then he dreams that they could just leave the planet and be in a relationship without other people judging them. That being said, people need to stop making it such a big deal when it involves a 16 or 17 year old versus someone who's still a child. Americans are obsessed with this.

Fiona Apple – Every Single Night Lyrics 2 years ago
The song is about her struggle with OCD. One of my compulsions was always to touch certain things and it never felt like you had completed the task because there were more compulsions/things to touch. "I just want to feel everything."

Fiona Apple – The Way Things Are Lyrics 2 years ago
Fiona mentioned she wrote this song in response to reading "Letters to the Editor" about her interview for Spin Magazine. She had unabashedly complained the whole interview and then a few issues later, read how readers were saying she came off annoying or bratty or unlikable. So she wrote it how she felt bad reading that people didn't like her but then realized she sold herself like that so she can't be offended. "How can I fight when we're on the same side?" She wouldn't know what to do with reading nice comments about her because she was so used to hearing negative feedback at that time, which is always hard to read secretly (like celebs do on Twitter nowadays).

Fiona Apple – Never Is a Promise Lyrics 7 years ago
I went to a concert in the '90s and Fiona said she was on vacation with her parents and got mad at them so at 15, she sat on a boat and wrote this song. It seems to be about her parents telling her not to pursue a career as a singer and her trying to explain why it's not a choice but a necessity as expression... but when you explain this to a non-artistic person, they just think you're being defensive so it's best to just say nothing ("I realize what I am now too smart to mention to you.")

Alanis Morissette – Your Congratulations Lyrics 7 years ago
And this verse "I wouldn't have said it was in fact luck/I'm talking idealism here/I would not have been so self deprecating/I wouldn't have cowered For fear of having my eyes scratched out" is about her remaining humble when she's complimented from the success of "Jagged Little Pill" rather than owning up to the fact that she is talented and maybe even superior to a lot of other musicians -- because if she took this angle, she feared that the world would turn on her and say she is arrogant.

Alanis Morissette – Your Congratulations Lyrics 7 years ago
I always thought this was how she wanted the approval of critics and music lovers and the general population when she created songs and albums... and how she spent so much time trying to write the perfect songs that it actually deteriorated what made her songwriting special -- genuine desire to make a song. And how she had to abandon wanting congratulations and applause from the masses in lieu of creating what she wants to create.

Alanis Morissette – Joining You Lyrics 7 years ago
This song seems overtly autobiographical. A woman called Alanis trying to help her depressed daughter (her initials must be DAR because she says "dar" and sells it as "darling" in the linear notes to keep it anonymous) -- and Alanis points out that all the bad things that happen in our life are temporary and fleeting. If they were permanent and we'd feel that way forever, Alanis would kill herself, too. All the things she lists "If we were our bodies, if we were our name tags..." are metaphors for things that don't make them up as a whole. And the "You and I, we're like 4-year-olds, we want to know why and how come about everything" expresses the common bond that they have in that they are inquisitive and feel things deeply which is why life is harder for them than someone who just lives a hedonistic life.

Alanis Morissette – I Was Hoping Lyrics 7 years ago
The "all pig tails and cords" means she went to a fancy restaurant and her date paid and so the head waiter really kissed his ass as he left because he was rich... and just to be nice, he thanked his date, too, who didn't look wealthy with her hair in pigtails and wearing corduroy jeans (cords). She points out he's in his 50s because he didn't realize she had recorded this album that had sold 15 million copies and was a millionaire -- and she felt like pointing this out to him because her ego couldn't take him thinking she was just some rich guy's date. But she reflects that she's not "owed something" and she doesn't have to defend herself over something that doesn't make much difference (him being sycophantic towards her) in the end.

Alanis Morissette – Can't Not Lyrics 7 years ago
@[johnsmi213:27230] And the "How can I explain this to my children?" is the embarrassment she felt being made fun of and how bad she'd feel if her children heard people talking about her mother like this -- but fortunately for her she has no children (she was in her early 20s at the time). All the talk of how she feels she's lost is her pondering whether she should stand up for herself publicly or just ignore all the criticism in an attempt to remain professional.

Alanis Morissette – Can't Not Lyrics 7 years ago
Alanis wrote this song after "Jagged Little Pill" became a huge success but then people started turning on her, complaining that they don't like her voice because it just sounds like she's whining (e.g., the way her voice intentionally cracks on high notes). So it's her explaining how insecure and fragile she gets hearing all the criticism but admits that people will criticize because that's how human beings are wired -- to complain, to put down, hence they "can't not" criticize. And all the fans who love her unconditionally aren't enough to overcompensate for those who make fun of her ("Would you feel slighted if I said your love wasn't enough?") Hence, "All the unheard wisdom in the schoolyard, you think you're the right ones, you think you're the charmed ones, I'm sure" in reference to all the teenagers and music listeners who would mock Alanis' voice and claim she's overrated at a time when she was one of the biggest recording artists in the world.

Alanis Morissette – One Lyrics 7 years ago
A lot of this album has to do with Alanis dealing with her fame (like "Can't Not" is about dealing with people who complained that she isn't a good singer, the contrarians who put down someone after they become popular). In this song, she admits to being jealous when the media gushes about another female pop star as if, by doing so, it means she would be less acclaimed -- but then realizes that they both can be well-loved singers and she doesn't have to feel threatened because someone else gets attention for producing a similar album (I don't know which singer she is singing about but my guess is Tori Amos, whom she'd later go on tour with).
