Jackson Browne – Late for the Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
The title and phrase "late for the sky" seem to refer to the fact that the relationship within the song is essentially "late". Things haven't worked out in an ideal way and haven't headed towards the sky or risen above toward the pinnacle or perfect situation. Also, for me, it seems to allude to the confusion and latency expressed in the song. In the "how long..." sections, the lyrics suggest that something has been missed. This could be waking up from sleeping too late and missing the "sky" or a more metaphorical notion. All in all, it's one of my favorite songs and enhances a great scene in my favorite movie, Taxi Driver

Bruce Springsteen – Straight Time Lyrics 18 years ago
it's too bad that no one has commented on this song, because i find it to be interesting. here's a man who has been in prison for some time and has managed to begin a "normal" life. but the normality of life starts to get to him. "straight time" is hard. not what he's familiar with in terms of outside (of prison) life. down in the basement, there's some contemplation about what to- his former and present life converging. at the end, fantasy or dreams emerge.

Modest Mouse – Missed the Boat Lyrics 19 years ago
one of my top favorites from the new album. who cares about the exact fuckin lyrics? all you have to do is listen carefully to the song, which is what any concerned person would do anyway. there's no need to deride or criticize. but think about this- in our age, right now, we've been able to listen to an album that's not even released yet. and we've been able to comment on it profusely. when you sit and think about that, it's pretty crazy and amazing.

The Replacements – They're Blind Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is kind of like the replacements' take on cat stevens' "father and son". both songs deal with a young person and an older person. here, it's the singer and "they". basically misunderstanding and the seeming impossibility of connection between the two parties is a big part of both of the songs. a musical connection even exists. listen to the lines "I see what they only might if they learn but they're letting you burn" and compare it to "father and son"

Bruce Springsteen – Independence Day Lyrics 19 years ago
For me, this probably the saddest Springsteen song. In fact I think that "The River" contains the most emotional songs- tied with "Nebraska". Just a shitload of songs on "The River" really get me, this one, "The River", "Point Blank", "Stolen Car", "Drive All Night", "Wreck On The Highway". Even "Hungry Heart" has a pretty melancholy story within it, as most people know. But "Independence Day" just has this incredible sense of the loss of something that can never be retrieved- a relationship with a father, the familiarity of surroundings. There are a ton of striking lyrics in this song and the one of them that gets me the most is: "They ain't gonna do to me what I watched them do to you". Thanks Boss.

Mew – Comforting Sounds Lyrics 19 years ago
This song has a great pacing buildup to the instrumental climax. Even the ending is perfect, it just leaves you hanging for a splitsecond and then you hear the finale. I do agree with the drug interpretation. Although "blunted" could refer to an actual marijuana blunt, I think that it's rather implying a kind of numbed state of consciousness. Like a sharp point- or sharp mind- that has been reduced to a blunt and ineffectual point. "Comforting Sounds" has particular importance to me. I started listening to Mew after a rough couple of semesters at college. At first I was working 2 jobs plus classes. But when I quit one job, I had so much free time that I just started drinking more and more. It got to the point in my second semester where I was drinking upwards of 12 beers about 5 or 6 days a week after work. Once summer rolled around, I had a on-call job and would rarely be called in and wound up drinking about every single day. I got pulled over one day, thrown in jail for 7 hours and got a DUI. Over the next few months I couldn't believe what I'd done. Being in a relatively prestigious school and never having received as much as a parking violation, I felt I'd really fucked up. That's when I found this song- and I felt I could really sympathize with it.
