The video is very revealing about this song's meaning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vagvI7Y1hZ8 I think the interpretations of it being about questioning authority are way off. In my view, this song is a brilliantly dark commentary on the habits of over consumption and its cumulative effects on the body. It highlights the ever present sense of naive, immortal 'do anything' youth that many of us go through at one time or another early in our lives. "You're gonna know if you keep on asking questions!" What questions? The questions you ask your body every time you light up another cigarette, have another beer, eat more than you should, exercise less than you should, etc. You're asking yourself questions... is this going to be the smoke that gives me lung cancer? Can I take another shot? What is this stuff doing to my body in the long run? Well, you're gunna know real soon. I don't know if it's "ritalin" or "rhythm", I hear both when I listen and it's not exactly clear, but either way gets the point across. "WE LOVE YOU IN GLACIAL WAYS". This is my favorite part. When something is glacial it's slow and progressive; but certainly on a different timescale than the human mind is accustomed to focusing its attention on. Think of time lapsed photography, plants growing, glaciers moving, but more importantly... lungs getting blacker, sicker.. liver deteriorating.. ris for heart attack gradually increasing. Death by a thousand tiny cuts. I believe it's the substances that are actually saying that line. It's an eerie bit of irony, coming from them. They 'love' you in glacial ways, little by little over a long time. And we keep loving them back, because we can't quit them. We keep asking ourselves those questions, but then shrug our shoulders, shake our heads, and say "Just one more won't hurt." This song is brutal self-honesty at its cruelest. |

| Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros – Johnny Appleseed Lyrics | 18 years ago |

"I think the song is more than just "workers rights". I thin its about humanitarian rights in general within the U.S. and paying attention to the idea that it is the little people, or the "bees" in this case, which make the larger picture and actually make progress:" I'm not so sure an -Englishman- like Strummer would be writing a song to focus on humanitarian rights in the -US- when there exist plenty closer to home, or transcending a single locality altogether. The labour-oriented interpretation is probably most accurate, especially when one considers past works like Clampdown and Career Opportunities. |

| The Jam – Ghosts Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think this song is about waking up out of an introverted, shy-like shell to more thoroughly engage the world around us and the people in it. It's a great message for any kid in school who feels intimidated by the illusion of an unengagable world, or the lonely heart who is too shy to grab life by the horns and take the girl of his dreams into his arms. Simple, to the point, and certainly no hit.. this is the Jam at their finest. | |

| I don't remember exactly, but I sorta recall this song being about gang violence / labour disputes in Eton. I really don't remember well enough, though. | |
| The English Beat – I Confess Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Awesome song. I'm not even sure where to start interpreting this one. It seems that by this time, the Beat were talking less about typical ska themes (unity, politics, etc) and more about relationships, love, women, etc. (other songs on the album include End of the Party and Jeanette). If I had to take a stab at this one, I'd guess that it's about a guy who is unwilling to open himself up to the women he is involved with, and ultiamtely he doesn't care. The nature of this being a confession, however, suggests to me that these feelings are deeply rooted under the surface of an otherwise 'normal' man. | |
| The English Beat – Mirror in the Bathroom Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Yes, it's about a cocaine addiction, but it's also about the associated narcisism and paranoia which typically accompany such an addiction..so both of you (hoyden, unlikelyadict) are correct. | |
| The English Beat – Stand Down Margaret Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Songs like these must be sorta embarassing for the musicians who wrote them in retrospect. Anyone wanna imagine what a god awful mess England's economy would be in if labor had had its way back then? Yikes. | |
| The English Beat – Save It For Later Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think it's just about a guy reflecting on a history of bad relationships. | |
