I always thought it was "hay que venga la manana / hay que venga otra vez." it's pronounced the same as "ay," but has a slightly different meaning that made more sense to me: "the morning has to come, the morning must come again." it's inevitable that the morning will come even though he wishes the night would last forever with his lover? i don't know... just my 2 cents. |

I think this song relates to Kafka's "Metamorphosis." People spend their whole lives worried about plans and routines and they don't realize that they aren't really living, or "barely alive." Before they know it, they get turned into giant bugs. Or in the case of this song, they die. |

I don't know why it has to be about sufjan... he didn't grow up in Illinois so it could just be a fictional story about two curious young boys that happens to be influenced by an experience he had as a child. I think he chose to write it in first person because it makes the song have a greater emotional impact, but I don't think it means sufjan is gay. if he had written john wayne gacy, jr. in first-person would we all be speculating on whether or not sufjan is a serial killer? I think not. it's just a beautiful song, telling a story. it doesn't necessarily reflect 100% on the author. |
