| Manic Street Preachers – Door To The River Lyrics

This is one of my favourite Manics songs. It reminds me of the disappearance of Richey which is quite a grim observation. The Severn bridge where his car was found is apparently near the mouth of a river I read somewhere. So there's the connection to the 'Door to the river', also 'I think I'll leave and take some rest' is especially poignant, almost weary. The whole connotations of someone being lost and weary and the loss of innocence are evident throught, and the slightly painful catharsis of passing through the door to the river has exposed to him a glimpse of a glory previously inaccesible to him. |

The reason why The Smiths are so popular, is because they wrote songs that were so easily identifiable to people who had experienced similar emotions, and in the process musician and listener gain comfort from each other. Philip Larkin puts it better than me somewhere! |

I agree, ShakespearesSister, it's a very poignant and regretful.
Also, 'die' is an old english innuendo for an orgasm. Lying on the cold leather seats? Dying with a smile on his face? It could be a double meaning or it could be Morrissey just using very heavily loaded words to be interpretated anyway people want. |

...and the 'I know because she said so' sounds very unsure on the man's part, like she may have said something or done something and he read into it in a whole different way. It's all very sad. If only life was easier! |

I think another interpretation of this song is that the mentioned girl is so preoccupied with fear over whether this boy likes her; her perceptions and interpretations of situations are so poignantly negative, that she is bringing about the feared rebuffing, as he perceives her fear as indifference towards him. Basically, it's a song about insecurity and muddled interpretations that, say, people with paranoia might experience. |
