The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby Lyrics 19 years ago
Whenever I listen to thos song, I always imagined an older wonan (E.R.) Who just recently lost her husband.

"Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been, Lives in a dream."
This is her rememnering her own wedding day. She picks it up to look at it and it make her daydream about her marrige to her late husband.

"Waits at the window, wearing a face she keeps in a jar by the door, Who is it for?"
Since the loss is so fresh, so sometimes feel like her husband should be walking through the door any minute, so she patiently waits her him there by the window. Look out for him. The "face" she's wearing is a face of smiles and happiness that she plans to great him with. But who is it for? She knows he's not coming back.

As for F.M. Well, I always thought he was a different story entirely. That F.M And E.R are just two people who's have one common theme: They're lonely.

"Father McKenzie, writing the words of a sermon that no-one will hear, No-one comes near"
In F.M's eyes. It seems people have lost faith in the church. They either don't come or don't really listen to the words that he preached which makes him feel like a man alone with his religion.

"Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there, What does he care?"
Simply no body's there to care what he's doing. He might as well got some mending done.

"Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name. Nobody came."
E.R is now dead and took her (and her husbands) name with her. And since her husband was all she had, one one was there to mourn at her funeral.

"Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave. No-one was saved."
Fron what I picture it, he was doing his typical father-type thing "ashes to ashes. dust to dust" (which might have picked up some other the dirt to do). After he's one with his jsut he walks away feeling hollow. He job is now just a routine that goes unnoticed and his words have no one and it's something he thinks about while he wipes away the dirt.

I, in no way, say that that's exactly what the songs meaning is. It's just a way I always interpret it to be. I just thought I'd share! Sorry if it's long.
