I think in the last verse, where he speaks of the flowers, that he has seen them in the pictures. I think this song is about an observation of a riot, where they all go to the area, the rioters "went wild" and swallowed the police... then they go home with the cameras hoping to have captured some kind of police brutality, possibly, or maybe just to study what happened, and once again they see "them" going wild, then when the one this song is to be in the perspective of gets tired of the riot, pretty much, he notices a bunch of flowers on a hill, and the beauty that possesses compared to the riot... Just a thought.... |

You know, if the past is only the future with the lights on, and as you guys say EVERYTHING is the same you can just see what happened, then everything is the same, and you would make the same mistakes and shit. I think it is right about saying that the future is something you can't see and the past is something you can, but I think its also saying you learn from your mistakes, and so won't make them again. If something is happening, you look back in the past, if it happened before and you made a mistake, you don't make the mistake again, and then future's light is off, because you don't know what's going to happen this time. And I don't think the story is about meeting someone in a bar, I think its about actually someone the writer knew about before, and is an alcoholic. That's why she's always at the bottom of a plastic cup, drowning in drunk sincerity. I think he knows her deeper than that... And I think he might be telling her to stop feeling sorry for herself. |

To me, he was doing something to hurt his lady, whatever it may be, not really cheating though, I don't think that works in context. He didn't know it was hurting her, "How could I have ever been so blind?" but one day, she told him. And he realized it, and is saying with the "If you're sad its time you spoke up, too." line that maybe saying things will change them. So, in a summary. He was consistently doing something to hurt her, but didn't know. She tells him, he realizes it. |

I think there are multiple things to this, but I think the jist of it all is... (keeping in mind that Shaun has actually gone for treatment for his alcoholism) Shaun is a depressed during this album, so he does a lot of alcohol, drinks a lot... and I think people are saying that he should be fine by now, or would be if he didn't indulge in alcohol so much, and he tells people he will quit but he doesn't. And the ending "I am fine... again." I think concludes with he got drunk again, cause that's why people do that stuff, to feel better... yep. |

Well, I think that this song is about a couple breaking up. The difference between a pencil and a pen is the idea that she is erasing him from her memory, but he's keeping it ink, as it is referred to later. I'll break down verse for verse. "You wanted to know if If it was worth the pain that it has caused us. Both our lives - subtract one life To know why it was you deserved this" This is the breakup, they were dating, and they're not, one life is subtracted. Maybe he did something, so she's asking "Was what you did worth the pain? "As simple as I can I'll tell you the difference Between a pencil and a pen And where it will leave us now As your body lets you die, And I sit here still alive" She's trying to erase him from her memory, and he's keeping it in. As result, she becomes very empty inside, depressed;;; dead. However, the man has learned from it and continues to be alive. "In my memory I wrote you down in ink I never wanted to erase your story Even with the tragedy it brings" Going further about the memory, elaborating on what he's saying by the difference between a pencil and a pen. "The fluid in your lungs That tells you you're losing, stop breathing The medicine that comes will fix you Will help you but takes you from conscious to sleep Place my hands to face and weep" This, i think, is a metaphor about anti-depressant (or the likes) pills. It saying you're dying, as in depresed or whatnot, you start taking the pills and it does make you feel better but it completely changes you, it makes YOU go from concious to sleep, and this change in the person makes the guy sad, he doesn't see the same thing, so he weeps. "Something beautiful Something torn from my hands I'm not ready for you to die" Something beautiful torn, is her breaking up with him, and he doesn't want it, so he's not ready for her to die. "(I can't leave here like this, get away from her) This day will end with a life complete (that is not all that she was. I don't want to say goodbye yet) This day will end with a life complete My closest friend here in front of me" He doesn't want to break up with her... and I think either the closest friend wants to date him, or the closest friend is going to date his ex... I think this song is actually about a relationship of lies... Simply for the reason that he talks of a 'false apology' See, if he really did feel bad about something, it wouldn't be a false apology, I don't think. So, if you break it down keeping that in mind, the relationship had a lot of lies in it. I think with the "And to think that you would not be scared or surprised if I’d severed all these ties" its him thinking she doesn't love him. Hence, why she wouldn't care at all if it ended. And, I think he refers to lust as the relationship. There are two types of relationships, ones that develop off lust, and ones that develop of compatibility. I think that the screams of lust are saying they lusted for each other in the beginning and now that they aren't lusting anymore, they are arguing all the time. The lust also goes with the "Tonight, you're everything... you're everything to me no more." Because she was everything, and then all of a sudden no more, because the lust ran out. I think it also refers to lust in the lines "I feel so numb to see this bitter end of beautiful illusions" and "I refuse to be slave to your false beauty again" At first, she was beautiful due to lust, but afterwards, he realized it was his mind playing tricks on him and making her better than she is. And, lastly, I think the chorus is referring to him not being sad. Because, him losing himself in anguish and needing help to get over her... I think its kind of like "I'm sorry, I'm sad this is happening, too..." but its a false apology... So, I think it all boils down to a lustful, dishonest relationship that is ending. Sorry I said lust so much. =/ |
