Not sure why almost every set of lyrics omits this quatrain at the beginning of the second stanza: Show me the waves Stereo sound Over the roof Is there a roof? Is there a ground? |

Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but it reminds me a lot of something like Tom Wolfe's "You Can't Go Home Again." It's like they're singing to someone who's left and made it big, but in a way that won't let them come back home. January clipped your wires [In january, you lost touch with "home"] The summer went straight through your tires [spent all year traveling around] Every faded sign that passed you Used to point the way towards you [you're becoming famous and well-known] Lately you've come to enjoy the generosity of strangers [rather than being surrounded with true friends, you're involved with people who are basically strangers] The mechanisms you employ They may have got you known But I'm not scared to go home [The things you do may have gained you notoriety, but at least I don't have to worry about going back to where I came from] That's how it reads to me, at least. |

| The Killers – Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Although based on what I've heard, the second line is wrong. It should say something like "Got a new place, and how it's so much better," reflecting on how Jennifer's moved out. | |

| The Killers – Change Your Mind Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I always thought it said "While I ignore that we've all felt like this before." That also works better with what I thought it meant. Line, by line: [Racy days] I guess just describing the time when you're in love or dealing with relationships as exciting [Help me through the hopeless haze] almost a prayer, asking for some guidance through the confusion of romance [But my oh my] But my oh my needs no interpretation [Tragic eyes I can't even recognize myself behind] I read this to mean that the whole situations has confused him to the point that he doesn't even know who he is anymore [And if the answer is no Can I change your mind] straightforward enough. If you don't like me now, do I have a shot to convince you? [Out again a siren screams at half past ten and you won't let go] this is where the song goes into a little bit of storytelling. Perhaps he sees the girl socially - we've all had crushes on friends before - and she is constantly around him (won't let go) even though he'd rather withdraw from her 'cause it's not working out the way it should, or maybe they have a past together and they're still close. [While I ignore that we've both felt like this before it starts to show] It seems like the guy has had a history with this girl, and while he wants to start with a clean slate, things from the past still show up as obstacles [So if I had a chance would you let me know?] Simple enough. Since they appear to have a past, he wants to know if she's made up her mind that they definitely have no future, or if she's still unsure. [Why aren't you shaking] he's asking her why she's not as confused as he is? [Step back in time] Remember whatever is they had in their past [Graciously taken Oh you're too kind] Lines that rhyme with the above, and probably something Brandon felt at some point, but impossible to interpret. If I had to venture I guess, I'd say she's still outwardly nice to him, but he's making no progress on whether she wants him or not. [We're all the same And love is blind] We're all the same, we don't choose who we fall in love with [The sun is gone Before it shines] Greatest line in the song. Says basically, the "sun" of being in love is ruined by the confusion and heartache before you get a chance to enjoy it. That's just my take on it. I know I'm way late on adding my interpretations, but someone might still care. |
