I'm pretty sure it should be: "You moved up north in a farmhouse, there's cowshit in your brain and love in your heart". Great song though. |

| Billy Bragg – The Short Answer Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I can't believe nobody's commented on this! Beautifully written lookback at a perfect (at the time) relationship that crumbled away, and Billy's looking back wondering if he'll ever meet that special someone. I relate to this song far too much for my liking. Two parts that really get me - "I wonder sometimes how did Dad meet Mum, and how did they conceive of me" - which really just sums up how you feel when you find yourself on your own after you think you've met 'the one'. And the line that kills me every time - "She should have been the last but she was just the latest". Sob. Bragg's more known for this political songwriting, but he's unbelievably good at writing about relationships. The album that this comes from, Workers Playtime, is highly recommended. |

Surprised there's no comments on this one yet. I love Kate Nash's stuff, and this is one of her best. Lyrics are pretty self-explanatory, it's about a young couple and he's trying to explain to his girlfriend how he feels about her. The closest he can come is by comparing her to birds - he knows she's got the potential to hurt him ("birds can fly so high or they can shit on your head") and the way he feels about her scares him ("they can almost fly into your eye and make you feel so scared") but at the end of the day he's willing to take a chance on her ("when you look at them, and you see that they're beautiful, that's how I feel about you"). Love the ending too - "he said 'cool'". Kate's only 19 - looks like she's going to be around for some time to come. |

| Just the perfect definition of unrequited love. Kate Nash is going to be a massive star. | |

Yep, pretty self-explanatory song - the relationship's gone wrong but Guy can look back on it with fondness and hold no regrets. Beautifully written, Guy Garvey's lyrics are always fantastic. "And would you tell her not to talk as if I died/Though a tiny part just did" - that line just kills me every time. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Despair in the Departure Lounge Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The reference to Rodney and Del is about the TV programme Only Fools And Horses - Alex says that he's watching Only Fools And Horses on the plane ("there may be tellys on the back of the seats in front") but it doesn't cheer him up as he's still pining for his girlfriend. The most famous scene in OFAH is where Del Boy's trying to impress two women in a wine bar and falls flat on his face when leaning against the bar ("like when he falls through the bar, but you're feeling the same"). Great song, one of the Arctics' finest. |
